Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just ordered a G5 with UHF-D. I have been setting up PPS ver. 4 and would appreciate feedback on if I am a go, no go, or FUBAR with my zone and knobs setup. I'm starting with my local UHF P25 Phase 1 trunked system. Imported the site and TG's from RR to my profile with no issues. Setting up knobs, I set Knob 1 with all 14 TG's (Non Priority) TG Scan. Knob 2 just FD/EMS 6 TG'S (Non Priority) TG Scan. Knob 3 just DPW (Non Priority) etc. Knob 4 Townwide 1TG TG Monitor. Knob 5 is our one UHF FD Conventional freq set to Monitor Mode. Thanks in advance for comments or suggestions.

In my view, there are wrong ways to do it but there are also many right ways based on personal preferences. Without knowing specifics on your local system, what you have sounds logical. I bet you find you’ll never want to give up on more interesting TGs in order to just listen to DPW.

Thanks for your feedback. Our DPW does get interesting around here when we get a foot or more of snow and they start clipping mailboxes, cars, etc while snowplowing. Am I good with the one UHF conventional freq in knob 5 on monitor in the same zone as the P25 Phase 1 UHF system?

You can actually add up to 16 conventional frequencies on one knob using the Normal Scan mode. You do need to program each one in a separate zone/knob before adding to Normal Scan though. Also, scan rate is not very fast so realistically you'd get better results doing no more than 5 if they have moderate to heavy traffic.

I have separate zones for each department, but then for slow times, I dumped the max talk groups into one zone. Not a replacement for a scanner (no busy channel lock out is my biggest complaint) but other than that a great radio in a great size!

If it's a trunk system you can block TG during scan just like a nuisance delete or busy channel lockout

Decide if you want to record any of those TG’s. By default they are all off. For example on the overnight I switch knob to a single TG I want to replay in the morning. Set this up by going to the Systems tab and then click on TG’s. You can edit label names there too and check the recording box as needed.

There is a busy channel lock out, you set it up in the PPS (E12) and can activate it as needed. Same thing with holding on a TG. Once you change knob positions it clears the hold/remove.

Thanks for the info. Just got the radio last weekend. Took a while to get used to programming and get it how I like. Now to learn all the intricacies.
