I bought a new PRO-106 Digital Trunking Handheld Scanner.

It looks like programming wise, I am way over my head. I've read the manual which is in another language and wonder if I should have bought something simpler for a novice like me.

Is there an easier (user friendly) way to undertsnad and program the unit? All I want to do is scan UHF/VHF.

I need all the help I can get.

Welcome to RR.com, Chino!

The scanner you have is a very robust unit capable of a lot more than just UHF/VHF and you will be wasting a good share of its ability, but then it is YOUR scanner. At least you have room for expanded interests should you decide to move to other things.

AlabamaRS has steered you to a site that has an easier to understand manual for the 106. You should also consider programming software for that unit because programming by hand can be a tedious job, and often times frustrating.

Some of the software that is available for the 106 is WIN500, PSRedit500, and ARC500. None of these are free, but they all have a 30-day "test drive" so you can decide which one you would prefer to use before buying. If you decide to use WIN500, you will find help in this "tutorial" to make some things easier to understand.

I would also encourage you to return to your User CP (left side of the second blue bar from top of any page if you are logged in) and fill in your location (city & state) so it will show automatically in each of your posts. Answers to so many questions asked in these forums depend on the location of the person asking the question and by automatically showing your location those location-dependent answers will come much faster.

Thank you qlajlu for your navigation and good advice. I'll follow it.

As an owner of a remote ranch in Arizona city won't be much help. The nearest one is 80 miles away.

There is a company back east which will program the unit for me. Do you think it's worth it? Otherwise I thought about purchasing WIN500. If I do it where can I buy it and do I need a cable interface?

Shame I didn't learn about this site before I bought the unit. I find it extremely informative.

Alabama, thank you too for the user friendlier manual. Certainly more readable than the manual

Unfortunately the Pro-106 does not come with the USB cable you will need to connect the scanner to your computer. Once you have the cable and you have your computer and scanner talking to each other, it is a snap to program the scanner. I would never pay someone else to do it because I want to know how to take care of things and maybe change things around. It is MY scanner, so I'll set it up MY way.

Someone else can provide the part number from Radio Shack for the cable you will need. Make sure to get the correct one.

I provided links in my first post to you above that will take you to the individual Web sites for the software. You first download the software and then after you open it you will be given an opportunity to purchase it with a link provided at that time.

Just put your county and state in for your location.

Thanks. I'll get the cable and software.

Just out of curiosity, I loaded the VTC for the closest area to me (Phoenix Reg1) as no other choice is closer to SE Arizona. I pushed the "Scan" button and displays shows scanning on "4" (PhoenixReg1).
Is the scanner scanning all types of frequencies? I could not get the squelch to sound off although I have the "S" in display. Forgive me if this is an unforgiving question.

Thanks for your help.
