Hmmm. Also will flash if bad input voltage detected. USB voltage is a standard 5V regardless of the adapter's current capacity. The HP-2 will only draw the amount of current that it needs (which is less than 500 mA when turned off and charging).

The Belkin charger is going back. I'm always reluctant to buy their stuff and should have listened to that inner voice this time. I'll find a better unit.

No green colored LED

OEM batteries fully charged when reinstalled in vehicle and connected to USB cable to auto 12v outlet red light comes on
HP 2 working fine

No sense it me discussing this somewhat unimportant subject anymore. The LED light appears not to iturn been no matter if batteries are fully charged.?

The scanner cannot detect that batteries are fully charged. It can only know that it has continuously charged for the full set time (IIRC, default 14 continuous hours).

Can I leave it plugged in and use it without damaging the batteries?

I waited the 14 hours and got the green light lol!

HP-2 Flashing Red LED charge light

This am while driving my HP2 red LED started to flash I realize this means a voltage or battery error

The internal AA everready 2300 May NiMd were charged when installed a day or so ago
Just unplugged the usb fwhich is connected to the vehicle power outlet and light went back to red. Never green... Old story LOL

New HP-2 owner. Charged mine for around 18 hrs.. All I ever got was a flashing red charge LED. Upper right corner icon shows charging when plugged in. Took off charge (unplugged USB),battery level shows full. Went completely dead prior to my charging via wall charger,so apparently it did successfully charge the batteries.I,too have the same question.....will it harm the HP-2 to leave on USB wall charger all the time? In the meantime,I'm charging then unplugging. BTW.....so far this is a fantastic radio.....amazing how sensitive it is. Good job Uniden.

Unless I'm using the HP-2 on a road trip, or temporarily in a different room, mine stays plugged in to a USB power source 24/7.

A flashing red light is not normal. It indicates a CPU issue or perhaps a bad cell.

I sometimes get the flashing red light as well, This only happens when I am using a 12V to USB charger in a vehicle. It only does it when I am using a USB extension cord for the unit. it does not flash if I don't use the extension cord or with my wall wart USB charger.

Charge light

As some may know I had asked the green LED question some time back. Most respondandents never got it to turn green ( another story)

the bad cell or input voltage issue ? is a trigger for the LED flashing red but seems strange when plugged into a relative stable 12 V outlet the light would flash then back to normal steady red after usb is unplugged and then plugged back in.

Must be a bug in the HP 2 power circuit not a issue as it does not affect the great preformance of the radio just most owners expect the radio to work as designed

After more use I have realized a few,I guess obvious things. First I don't believe my HP-2 has a battery or CPU problem, because I only get the flashing red light when I'm on "plugged up" power. And when I cut the unit off,and charge the batteries.....via wall adapter,it does stay constant red. Like a child with a new toy.....haven't been able to leave it off long enough for the maximum charge time. Maybe soon I will see the green light.

Well to add to my previous post, if I plog the unit into my wall wart USB charger and leave the radio off in charging mode, the light turns green after 14 hours.

It should also go off in 14 hours then if ON - possible that your charger does not have enough amperage.

Flickering or flashing indicates not quite enough amps also. Higher volume, more flickering will confirm.

In my mobile install I see similar behavior - with radio off, it charges with a steady red light. If I then power the radio on, it starts to slow-flash red. I'm assuming I need a better 12v to USB converter.

Edited to add: Can anyone recommend a particular "cigarette lighter plug" adapter that you've found actually supplies sufficient power? It appears that labels sometimes aren't completely accurate.

I may just give up and ditch the batteries while mobile. It's a pain that it prompts about charging every time I start the car. That should be a static setting, along with "remember previous power-on state", so it turns on automatically when the car is started.

Another possible factor: I'm using a USB extension cable. Maybe I need to switch that out. I'm seeing some discussions online that cheap cables may not be able to supply full power.

Just an update: it appears the extension cable was the issue. I replaced it with a different cable, and not I get a steady red charge LED.
