I tried an iPad USB adaptor and got the flashing red. Used the USB adaptor for a Verizon MiFi and it stated red
Do it the right way and get a proper battery charger. Your rechargeable will last longer and your radio probably will too. You can get a good battery charger (one that charges each battery separately) for not much more than $30.I have charged the radio for more than 14 hours, the LED stays red.
I am charging with radio off with a 5VDC, 0.7A Samsung charger.
The concern is really not the LED itself, I am concerned if I'm
overcharging the batteries.
My HP 2 new June 2015, was ordered with a Apple USB adaptor direct from SM works fine in changing OEM 2300 Ma batteries
I have tried both the larger iPad charger and the smaller iPhone, neither seem to work. But I will try the USB connector on my 14 Subaru Outback
The auto power outlet with USB cable did not work so suspect radio did switch batteries which should make no diffrence if it's the radios charging circuit that is a problem or not recognizing the power source. But it's not an issue since I just charge externally
I use Eneloop exclusively and charge them with an external Powerex MH-C9000. For wall power I use an iPad OEM 10 watt.

Since I don't charge batteries in my radios I use La Crosse chargers and eneloop batteries.
Since I am not charging in the radio, the times I run them on USB I use basic 5v adaptors and standard USB cables. Any will do.

The stock batteries are fine. Comparable to eneloops.
Keep in mind that the charging circuit has no sensors. It just charges away for x hours where x is set by you. No sensors for where the battery is, how hot the batteries or unit is getting, etc.
My strong recommendation would be to get a proper charger for $30 or so that independently charges each battery, shuts down when batteries are charged or excessive heat, etc. Your batteries and radio will probably both last longer.
I think it charges at 200 ma. Most people recommend low discharge batteries to be charged at 500 ma.
My 2 cents.
