I've used Apple adapters and had no issues. Maybe your adapter is putting out an out-of-spec voltage?

I have charged the radio for more than 14 hours, the LED stays red.
I am charging with radio off with a 5VDC, 0.7A Samsung charger.
The concern is really not the LED itself, I am concerned if I'm
overcharging the batteries.
Do it the right way and get a proper battery charger. Your rechargeable will last longer and your radio probably will too. You can get a good battery charger (one that charges each battery separately) for not much more than $30.

The charging circuit in the radio just charges away for x amount of time without regard for the condition of the batteries.

Interesting

As SM sells this small iPhone type USB charger to go with several of their scanners.......

BTW:seperate thread I started early this year on the charge LED never changes from a Red to Green at least on my HP 2 using various types of charged AA batteries and on the USB cable auto 12 v outlet but that's another thread........

My HP 2 new June 2015, was ordered with a Apple USB adaptor direct from SM works fine in changing OEM 2300 Ma batteries

Just want to confirm with you or anybody willing to reply.....

Will a apple i-phone "white cube" USB plug in wall charger work with the HP-2 for charging both in the scanner on and off mode?

Also, if your car is equipped with a USB port will it charge the batteries regradless if the sanner is on or off?

Depends on which cube you're talking about. They make a small one and a large one.

Car depends on the current it can provide AND whether or not it properly identifies itself as a high current source.

Its the one that comes in the box with an i-phone 5C...I am guessing the small one.

I also have a Nikkon model EH-69P USB wall adapter that has an output of 5V 0.55A. Input is 100V-240V 50-60 Hz.

Will have to check on the car.

I have tried both the larger iPad charger and the smaller iPhone, neither seem to work. But I will try the USB connector on my 14 Subaru Outback

The auto power outlet with USB cable did not work so suspect radio did switch batteries which should make no diffrence if it's the radios charging circuit that is a problem or not recognizing the power source. But it's not an issue since I just charge externally

What kind of external charger and batteries you use? I have seen where some folks have said on here that the stock batteries are POC.

And what type/brand do use for DC and AC supply adaptors?

Tried finding some for the HP-2 on Uniden's site but couldn't see any.

Found these on Amazon:

Any opinions on these?

I use Eneloop exclusively and charge them with an external Powerex MH-C9000. For wall power I use an iPad OEM 10 watt.

Since I don't charge batteries in my radios I use La Crosse chargers and eneloop batteries.

Since I am not charging in the radio, the times I run them on USB I use basic 5v adaptors and standard USB cables. Any will do.

It's not the batteries Engizer's 2300 ma because my other HP 2 that I had they/ iit
worked very well ( internal charging and associated LED) with the existing batteries so I suspect it's this particular HP t2 that has perhaps a defective internal charging circuit but no big deal I'll just charge the batteries externally and not worry about LED lights or charging

thanks so much for your help

Anybody have any experience consistently charging their batteries "inside" the HP-2? Any issues?

Would it be a good idea to drain them as much as possible during initial use, before re-charging?

How good are the stock batteries that come with the unit?

FY.....I purchased an over 1000ma adaptor, as required per the owners manual to charge in the On mode as well.

Thanks.

The stock batteries are fine. Comparable to eneloops.

Keep in mind that the charging circuit has no sensors. It just charges away for x hours where x is set by you. No sensors for where the battery is, how hot the batteries or unit is getting, etc.

My strong recommendation would be to get a proper charger for $30 or so that independently charges each battery, shuts down when batteries are charged or excessive heat, etc. Your batteries and radio will probably both last longer.

I think it charges at 200 ma. Most people recommend low discharge batteries to be charged at 500 ma.
My 2 cents.

Yeah, I figured it would be better to charge with an outside source. However since the owners manual basically endorsed or least did not forbid in scanner charging I thought it would be okay, till I could lay down some dough for a good La Crosse or MaHa charger. The only reason I purchased the 1000ma adaptor was because that was what the owner's manual recommended for On mode charging...

As always, thanks tor the input Mark.

The MaHa MH-C9000 is a great charger. Not only does it charge, it will break in, cycle and analyze batteries. It handles 1 to 4 batteries, doing each individually. You can charge three batteries and cycle one, for instance. It's a little pricey but it's well worth the money.
