Hello,

First off I live in northern Jackson county but, do spend a large amount of time at school in lansing. I've been looking into buying a Uniden BC245XLT or BC250D.

With this hobby, is there much to listen to around the lansing area?

If so, would I beable to pick up much analog traffic or is digital the way to go?

Thanks,
Gordon

If you want to be able to listen to the most traffic, and you spend a lot of time in the Lansing area, I would suggest the Uniden BC296D (Handheld) or the BC-796D (Base/Mobile) since Ingham county is supposed to be switching to a UHF EDACS system, which the Pro-96 won't be able to monitor properly.

If you're not too concerned about Ingham county, go Pro-96, there's a lot of traffic on the MPSCS (State Radio System) that you can't get with the BC250D since it doesn't support the control channel format used on that system (the Pro-96, BC296D, and BC796D radios do support it).

Thanks for the reply.

I was really looking for a handheld unit under $300. Guess I'll just have to watch ebay for awhile for a pro-96 and see if I can't get one used for under $500.

If you don't want the expense of digital, and don't mind waiting til next summer to hear Lansing Fire, go ahead and grab a BC246T. The best non-digital scanner on the market, and you won't miss a whole lot in the LAN - JXN corridor with a non-digital. But don't get a BC250D, that'll do you no good.
