Hi, I just joined up, and noticed there are several members from my area.
Just wanted to say HI, and if anyone has any cool freqs. for the Marshall-Lasalle Co. area, I'd love to check them out. Thanks

ILbandit,

I am not from IL .. but welcome to the group anyways!! :)

I guess you have visited the RRDB already, right? fyi .. each county down at the bottom has a link for "unknown" frequencies. If you click on that, it will list for you all the frequencies that someone has not figured out what they are used for.

Thanks for the response, there are quite a few in there that I didn't have. I live in Toluca, so I had a few of the local ones for it.

I am fairly new to this so I have a couple questions...

1. What are the numbers (100.0) and (82.5) ?

2. On the highway, and Sherrifs NET, The repeat freqs. listed,,, When it is transmitted on the repeat freqs., Is it the same transmission as on the original freq.?
I guess what I'm asking is : As long as I'm within range of one or the other, I should be able to hear both sides of the transmissions/conversation, correct?

Bear with me, I still learning >> :?

The only secret ones are going to be the ones operating illegally because they did not renew the transmitters FCC license. That is why you should start monitoring the unknowns as I pointed out earlier, ya never know what you might uncover!! :)

Those are the PL tones that are used with those frequencies. You can read more about PL tones here:

No worries. Usually, everyone here likes to help get the new guy up and running. :)

Our family has had several farms around Varna for decades, so I used to spend a lot of time there as a kid. We used to ride our horses and bikes all over. Spent a lot of time at a soda counter in Lacon as well as playing at the river landing there. Before they pulled up the tracks we used to try to out run the train coming in out of Toluca.

BTW, they still have that big slag pile in Toluca, I haven't been there in a few years?

Back to the radio stuff...

The 154.800 Sheriff repeaters repeat the mobiles traffic on a stronger transmitter, one in Lacon at the west edge of the county and the other in Varna for the east. They use the same frequency pairs. Since there was not a single site that could cover the entire county they needed to use 2 different sites. If you program your scanner without a PL then you only need it in there once, you will hear whichever tower you are closer to. (Probably the Varna tower from Toluca)

On the west side of the river, on the bluff above Sparland, I found a spot that overlooks the whole river valley and is a great place to hear scanner traffic from all over. I was able to hear Chicago PD and FD, Joliet, Aurora and Naperville trunked systems, Springfield and Peoria, as well as Kankakee and Champaign from there.

As for "Secret" frequencies, the best way to find them is to search for them. Since law enforcement is allowed to use just about any freq they want on a non-interference basis with low power for surveillence if you hear it then you may be too close! Put is a couple search ranges in your scanner and lock out the knowns and let it go a few days and see what happens. Start with VHF High band.

CRAYON,
Thanks for the info, That link explained alot to me. I appreciate it.

N9JIG,
Thanks for the info also, I get over around Sparland once in a while. I'll have to try that out.

I went ahead and put both freqs. in just to make sure.

Yes we still have the slag piles. We all call them "JUMBOS" around here.
They took the one right here in town and cleaned it up real nice. It is now a city park. lots of nice stuff for the kids, a fishing pond, and a little history of the mines from Toluca.
