Yes, that is a very capable radio. Just take your time, learn the programming, and visit here often to understand the radio systems in your area, and how to correctly program them into your new radio. Once you get it going, it will amaze you what it is capable of.

Have you downloaded any software yet?

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Popular_Software_for_GRE_Scanners

Go to the above link and look over the software choices for your new toy.

I have only used PSREdit500 & Win500 - both are very good and will make the task of programming your scanner so much easier & enjoyable. ARC-500 is also out there, altho I have no experience with it.

All the software developers offer great support via the RR Software Forums - Win500, PSREdit500 & ARC-500.

Update your location in your profile to give us an idea about what systems you might have questions about.......trust me, you'll have questions. And remember - the only stupid question is the one you do not ask.

Also a Premium Membership would also be of great help, as you can import straight from the website via the software.

Test drive all the software - they give ya a 30 free-trial period and for $35 any one would be a great investment.....altho I personally use Win500. ;)

Welcome & have fun!

Hopefully I made the right choice. This web-site offers allot of info, which is great. Have 2 AOR's an 8000 & 8200 that spend more time off than in the scanning mode...Looking forward to the technology the 6 has to offer along with the info and tutoring that I can find here....The 15th is the arrival date for my new radio, I promise I will read the manual at least twice before I push any buttons. My tech person at Univ-Radio suggests hitting the GRE web-site to upgrade the necessary programs before I tr to get it up and running...that seems to sound right....Later.............bilmont

The PSR600 is similar to the 500 in almost every way, and the 500 is an excellent scanner. You'll be happy with your decision, and with GRE as a company in general. Welcome to the hobby.

Thank you for the nice welcome. My new 600 arrived this pm via UPS.....Been reading the CD manual, and did reg. on-line at the GRE web-site..Did notice the upgrade files on the soft-ware....But being unfamiliar and un-sure of the procedure of dl into the scanner I thought I should check with someone who has copleted this process before..........Can you help with this or I have no problem submitting a help line on the gre600 group blog or whatever it's called... Several of you in this group have sent me a welcome and have pointed out some helpful sites to visit.............and the manual----it's deep but makes for good reading the first time anyway. I live in MI. and the Users guide has pre-programmed Trunked Radio Syst. Data has several major metro. areas in the country pre-loaded in the Vscanner area.........anyhow it has some of my local area counties I would like to set up but...do I need the most updated info from GRE?????? Sorry for so much here but ...there is so much to do................thanks......later..........bilmont

As far as what upgrade version that you would want to use, you might be better off to ask these questions in the Michigan forum, there is a bunch of great guys up there that would be of more assistance to you, with your state system.

Congrats on the new scanner. Before getting to far in to things, try programming just a simple trunking system object with the State of Michigan MPSCS Monroe County site frequencies and let it rip. That should provide some quick access to most of the activity in your area if you have not yet gotten that in and running. With your RR subscription and appropriate software like Win500, it's very easy to download radio information to program to your liking as well. Once you get the hang of basic radio programming, stepping up to updating the firmware is not all that different. The GRE information provides pretty decent instructions for their firmware updates, just follow everything and the specified order in which to apply updates. Depending on your specific location, you should be able to receive other Michigan sites, and maybe Ohio MARCS or Lucas County Ohio and other SE Michigan systems and actvity from Wayne, Washtenaw Counties.

WOW!! There's more stuff in your one county (trunked & conventional) than I have in one V-Scanner folder.......that includes 7 counties, state police and other misc. stuff

You'll learn fast with that much activity to monitor.

thanks for the comm. Jeff, you wrote exactly what I am thinking off minus the where-with-all to get it in the radio....after this note my plan is to subscribe to the software needed to make it possible....I'm here in Monroe county with a little help from the antenna I should be able to hear something as long as I fill in the blanks right.......maybe I'll find a couple of freq's in the data-base and hit the keyboard ---sort of take the first step..........thanks again..........update you later............bilmont.....oh yes...snow tonite

Bilmont,
Since you can download both PSREdit500 & Win500, and use them for a thirty day free trial, there's no reason not to try both & see which one you like best. ARC500 also can be downloaded for a 30-day trial. Any of them will program your new scanner, and do web imports. The user interface just looks, & feels, a little different.
Download links on the 600's Wiki page.
