RE: New MoCo Speed Cam

Thanks for the heads up!!!!

no prob.. As of yesterday, they had the 3 poles up ready to mount the camera gear but not the housing for the cam storage .. they should be done within this next week i'd say... Two poles angled differently with lighting and one for radar/picture taking(money taking) and the kicker is they lowered the speed limit from 40mph to 35mph to meet the criteria for speed cams

for a text description.. it's located between the intersection of Fernwood Rd. / Democracy Blvd. and just about near Rockledge Dr. / Democracy headed towards Wildwood Shopping Center and Giant Food.. It's on the right-hand side.. I guess all those Safe-Speed vans ticketing people.. they decided to install a perm cam...

blah!!!!

Quite an erection. So, near Walter Johnson HS... funny, was just over there about 10 days ago and wondered why there wasn't one there anyway... I'll never do that again! Down with speed cameras and tyrannical county gummints!

The speed camera van normally hides behind WJ's football field / stadium bleachers. I wonder why the county did not install the cameras over by the library. There are always students walking across the street just to get to the library at any time during the school day. Go figure....

yeah, I haven't seen the van's there in awhile. they must have been surveying and found that to be the most appropriate place. Exactly where people get off of I-270 and are still in speed mode..

and yes I was aware that I used erected on purpose to see how mature this group was heh

RE: Speed Cam

Regarding the speed cam being put up on Democracy Blvd. Headed towards Old Georgetown Rd., I just noticed them putting up another one across the street on the Walter Johnson side headed towards I-270..

Sigh..

It will most likely appear on the counties website of the locations of cameras..

[Non-Significant post..] Read if you like

the cams are being put up in BOTH directions of democracy blvd on that block.

a

my late post...

That would be a better way of stating it. Also noticed they cover all three lanes.. And with that I don't think I have anything else to add.

The end.

Starting January 5, 14 new traffic cameras will patrol roads in Rockville, Maryland. The cameras had been giving out warnings to drivers who go 11 miles an hour or more over the posted speed limit. Beginning Monday, there are no more warnings; rather drivers will receive $40 citations in the mail.

Police began posting speed cameras in Rockville in March, 2007. The department claims the cameras are a success. "Since the program started, we've seen a decrease in violator speeds, we've seen a decrease in the percent of violations, and a decrease in the number of accidents," said Rockville Police Capt. Bob Rappoport. The new camera locations are based on speed studies and neighborhood complaints.

Justification for Speedcam and ECM towards

Lets the journey begin...

I'd like to state that I have personally been involved with covert studies of red light runners for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) circa 1994-5.

A bit of history...

As all (or many) of us know, DC implemented their red light cams (and I think VA shortly after?) when it was still illegal under MD law. After awhile, it came up in The MD House and was argued over the implementation (e.g. threshold, zones, etc). Thoughts...

For one, where are these statistics coming from? I know from driving that people right away notice the cams and slow down just before them and speed up upon passing them. That could be a statistic according to the statement commented above.

Second, I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not but they lowered the speed limit from 40mph to 35mph right before the cameras went up on Democracy Blvd. This may or may not have to do with their traffic survey or was to meet the criteria of having 35mph limit in a school zone to meet it. My memory is a little fuzzy but I think I recall one of the conditions was such that it had to be 35mph. The House was very divided on the issue.

Third, I can see in some cases, accidents could occur because of these cameras. I've witnessed some pretty dicey behavior around these cams. Sometimes people forget about them, and shortly thereafter remember, then hitting the breaks and other such actions. These could cause erratic traffic patterns.

ECM:

With GPS technology becoming commonplace in most cars, it's become easily possible to grab the list of traps, red light cams, etc. and have them warn you at a set distance ahead of time. This is nothing new but it's becoming easier and easier to have "other" eyes watching out for you. Anything from real-time accidents re-routes .. you name it.

It's the way of the world. Someone comes out with a technology and there's always someone who will reverse engineer it.
