A new, lower cost ModeS receiver has been announced today, called Aurora. It's due to ship from January 2010 and will include 3D graphics, all for UK Pounds 299.

More information and a link to the supplier website here:

Aurora Virtual Radar 3D

Aurora seems to have had an immediate impact even before it ships with Kinetic removing the 5-minute delay on its Basestation socket output.

AirNav will be charging 90 UK pounds for its 3D graphics later this year on top of the RadarBox price of UK Pounds 400. Expect more price drops and maybe new features from the two established players over the next few months.

According to their website, they will not be shipping to the US and have no current plans to have a US dealer. Sounds like a nice system, but doesn't appear that it will be available to us in the US anytime soon.

Yes, that's what it says on the website. Shame because the price is very competitive vis-a-vis the SBS-1 and RadarBox. But Aurora hasn't been launched in Europe yet so we're waiting to see what it has to offer when it finally hits the market. There's already a debate started over on the Radarspotters forum.
