Not surprising at all considering that Belleville and Madoc aren't anywhere near the G8/G20.

The system is being rolled out in those areas first.

i dont think the g20/g8 summit has anything to do with it... apparently its the system their rolling out for their regular operations although nothing really happens here in ontario that the RCMP need to get involved with...
if its for the g20/g8 summit, i don't understand why theres towers in the london- windsor area.

It's already been said that it's being rolled out in the G8/G20 areas first.

I don't see Windsor being mentioned yet and it's already been discussed that the RCMP radio shop is in London.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9700/5.0.0.344 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/332)

Further to what Mike said, the RCMP's comm center is in London as well. It would make sense to have a tower there for backup purposes.

The RCMP have a very large role in Ontario. 90% of the time you won't even know they are dealing with something, since most work plain clothes, in totally uncommon, unmarked vehicles. If you want more info on their role in Ontario, give them a call @ Tel.: 519-640-7267 and ask to speak to a public information officer. (during business hours)

You can also find more info on "what they do" at the following link:

this morning the skip was really good... i live south of madoc and toronto's public safety east tower was coming in two bars and heard voice conversaions. while the skip was really good i did a search for the 420.0000-427.0000MHZ range and heard a p25 control channel on 424.3625. this frequency was NOT LOCAL. not sure if this frequency has been spoken of, but i thought i might give the information out.

The RCMP have set up a command center in the south end of Barrie close to highway 400.Numerous vehicles are parked there as well as a helicopter. These are for the up coming G8/G20 summit.

I was starting to "see" voice channels on the site 9 with 422.8375(cc) and a talkgroup of MOT: 0596 , but nothing was heard.
Probably because the VC's were:

  • 415.13750
  • 415.35625
  • 415.49375
  • 415.59375

Time to figure out some base, offset and spacing.

At the Infield Terminal (IFT) at Pearson Airport there are a few military support vehicles. There's at least two LSVWs ("Light Support Vehicle Wheeled") that have large antennas. I would guess they are running comms to the CH-146 Griffons, at the very least. Can't exactly stop and get a photograph of them, but the antennas are probably two stories high!!

There will be heli-transfers on the apron at the YYZ IFT separate from the motorcades for some of the dignitaries, but a Griffon isn't exactly a luxury VIP transport, so doubt that is the reasoning :p

If anyone had searchable can-military UHF/HF frequencies that MIGHT be relevant, it would be a good thing to have stored in the bank.

Ian just reminded me of a story I heard from a fire officer who manned a temporary station at the G8 summit in Kananaskis in 2002.

Directly beside this station was a self-propelled missile array. The station was also adjacent to a helispot, and American military forces were using it for their Apaches and such. Rumor has it that the crew of the missile battery staved off boredom/kept themselves in practice by tracking the USAF helicopters as they arrived and departed.

A rather stormy looking senior officer from the air platoon subsequently informed his ground colleague that further indications of missile lock would be responded to as appropriate.

Not sure about the deployment of Patriot missile batteries around downtown Toronto this time around, but I can't imagine so given the amount of air traffic that will still be operating - consider the medevac S-76s based at CYTZ, scheduled commercial IFR and business flights at YYZ/YTZ, etc...

Talkgroups 595 and 596 were both active in London last night. I didn't get a chance to note the voice frequencies however. I'll keep an eye for them again today if I'm in the area.

I caught 596 as well in Toronto on Saturday, but the voice freq's the scanner was spitting out didn't make much sense if you look up four or five posts to my previous post.:(
