Hello All,

Looking for a little assistance here. I am heading down to New Orleans this week and wanted to set up my scanner in advance. What systems should I set up in my scanner if I wanted to listen to police fire and ems in the area? I will be staying in the french quarters and would like to see what I can pick up from this area. I went into the database and I believe that the systems are all conventional, is this correct or is there more that I am missing? I have a digital Uniden 36T.

Thanks,

James

NOPD and NOFD should cover you just fine. Jefferson Parish makes up the rest of the greater New Orleans area but I would venture to guess you'll only be in JP to go to the airport.

NOPD: Orleans Parish (36) - City of New Orleans Police Talkgroups

You can catch these on two sites, Pan Am and NO Metro North Simulcast.

I've attached my current scanner configuration for FreeScan which includes those and a bunch of other stuff for the Greater New Orleans Area. The .txt extension to the filename will have to be removed.

By the way, the French Quarter lies within NOPD's 8th district so if you're only interested in activity there (mostly drunks), stick to that... here's a map of NOPD's districts.

...and here's a cheat sheet for our signal codes

I'm new to owning my own scanner but I've been listening to NOPD at work for about a year now... feel free to ask any other questions.

Be careful in and around the French Quarter (not 'quarters'), also known as the Eighth Police District and the "VCD" <g>. Despite a heavy police presence, both in uniform and plain clothes, violent street crimes in the 8th are not uncommon, particularly after the sun goes down.

I should know, I worked more of them than I care to remember.

You will need an earphone if you want to wear your scanner out on the street, due to ambient noise, and also if one of the thugs hears a police transmission from your radio, you might be marked as a law enforcement officer and therefore a legitimate target. No, I am not kidding. You might also compromise an ongoing police action which will cause more trouble than its wortH, particularly if someone gets hurt, or a criminal evades capture.

In the evening alone, the NOPD traffic will keep your scanner occupied most of the time, if you are scanning all of the Districts.

The NOFD is much quieter in the evening unless they have a working fire. New Orleans EMS is also pretty busy much of the time.

You will also be able to easily hear the Causeway Police, Acadian Ambulance, the Jefferson Parish S.O., St. Bernard and Plaquemines S.O., the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, the Harbor Police, the Bridge Police, Gretna, Harahan, Kenner, and other area police departments, not to mention Louisiana State Police Troop B, etc.

Please be careful out there!

Best wishes,
