Does anyone know if the new radio system that the city of Ottawa is moving to will be all encrypted and unscannable? I'm resigned to the fact that police will likely be all encrypted but what about fire or ambulance?

Anyone in the know? I've been searching but all I can find are newspaper articles from January saying the city is having issues and their goal is to switch over by end of 3rd quarter 2017 -- soon.

I've spent a bit of money on scanners recently and am getting hooked. :/

Sorry if this has possibly been discussed before.. but I didn't find anything

EMS is on fleetnet in analog. Fire is still on the old edacs system in analog although a few talkgroups have been heard in digital on the new system. Police I have no idea.

Your best bet is to plug in the system into your radio and tell us what you hear.

I'm able to catch EMS, Fire and police (Ottawa and OPP) now. That's not my issue. I'm asking if anyone in the know is aware if Ottawa Fire (or any other city service) will be encrypted when the transition is complete.

It's going to get really quiet in Ottawa in a few months I'm afraid...

Thanks

Why do you say that? Like I said a few fire talkgroups have been heard on the new system in digital mode. I know this much cause I heard them myself.

There's one in the RR database for P25: OFDTraining1. Ive gotten no hits on that one. Are there any others? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Right now most everyone (police and fire) is on the EDACS system.

I am simply asking what will happen in the future for Ottawa. Fire services for the city of Gatineau are encrypted as of a few months ago...so.... That tells me there's some sort of trend lol

Thanks for your input anyways.

Edit: Here's a link to the most recent news story I found regarding the switch: http://www.ottawasun.com/2017/01/06...gy-radio-system-before-adding-police-and-fire

Those that are in know, probably dont lurk around here. But if it is anything like what is happening in Vancouver, brace for FULL ENCRYPTION.
While I dont live there I would expect that due to the fact you are nations capital etc, RCMP for sure, Ottawa PD will be in same stakeholders meeting so they will have been fed the same line for ENC.
While Vancouvers roll out is far from complete, it has hit the same road block.
I asked a new junior member about the audio quality of his P25 P2 700 system here locally v the 800 Mhz provoice edacs he was on and said there was a difference, and admitted they were having issues, enough so that rollout has slowed . While if I have my scanner on the new system here every signal TG is ENC.
So all you can do is use pro96com to see what activity is what, I would be bracing for the worst.
An idea could be should a local FD or PD office be hosting an public open house for any reason, I would go and not hesitate to ask a question. I have done so before and have gleened some information about channels etc.
The info is out there it is how we as a hobby extract the data.

Thanks BC_Scan for the reply. I guess we'll have to wait and see. So far it looks like some of the city services that have switched (garbage and roads and some transit) are in the clear so that gives me a bit of hope....

This is a pretty good indicator: https://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/care...ectronic_Technologist_July_2016_10114301.docx

Supporting the radio system used by the OPS and manage the encryption system for all OPS radios including working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the integrity and security of the radio system and police operations.

...

Act in the role of Crypto Officer within the Key Management Facility (KMF) of the P-25 radio system in order to manage the encryption for all OPS radios during normal operations and when being serviced.
Manage backups of the Key Management Facility (KMF) encryptions keys and database.

...

Liaise with the fleet section regarding the commissioning and decommissioning of vehicles in order to ensure system security by having the proper profiles and encryptions keys programmed into the radios.

I guess we will all need to wait and see. As one who has listened to fire calls since OFS was VHF simplex, I hope they remain clear, but (please) let's not go down the discussion rat-hole of the pro's and con's and politics of encryption etc. which has spoiled other threads. Some previous predictions about these things have turned out to be inaccurate.

PD encryption is a given. Some TGs appeared which were ENC, whose activity coincided with EDACS PD talkgroups, so appear they were (are?) patched.

FS had some TG patching also, clear on the P25 side; exception was Airport Fire...given the nature of airport operations these days, no surprise.

Pretty well all of the City services except Bylaw and Parking Control have switched, plus a few odd exceptions, so the leaves PD and FS; and EMS still uses their special TGs on occasion. Garbage trucks were first to move!

no the FD is not encrypted, nor is bylaw, animal bylaw, city svcs.,garbage trucks and OC transpo busses, listen to em daily with 436's and RS pro 197, city police still active on PV as of now oct.19/2018,although city of Ott. Own the ambulances, not the province, they are still active on the old motorola smartzone(fleetnet in analog) as OPP are same but digital, everything in ottawa i listened to on edacs is still unencrypted. If you know how you can still listen to certain ottawa PV encrypted transmissions on a conventional channel that sometimes can be entertaining, but the moon and stars hafta' align just right. It isnt regular like it used to be

Now seeing encrypted activity on TG 3001,3002,3003, 3008, and 3088 which is likely OPS, but no P25
radios affiliated, probably just linked to EDACS at this point.

EDACS TG 533 (interop) is linked to P25 TG 2002.

Dec 19 looks like:
3001 is OPF East
3002 is OPF Central
3003 is OPF West
3023 is OPF Airport

A bit later I did see a few affiliated RIDs for 30xx TGs, one being in the 35xxx range.
