I was reading in the Record today that Wallkill was holding a public hearing on starting a "Business District" around 211 for the purposes of provding "enhanced police coverage."

Does anyone know what this means exactly? Will this district be starting its own PD, probably peace officers, since I'm not sure these districts can appoint full police officers. Or, is it just going to pay for more Wallkill Town officers?

Sounds to me like they're looking for more police officers, and to possibly build a business district substation

I don't think they want a "Business District Substation " The Town of Wallkill police station and court is right where the business district starts. I think the towns grown so large so fast that the " Enhanced Police Coverage " is a politicians way of saying they need more police. Which I believe they do.

You have all the malls, supermarkets, strip malls, your going to draw allot of crime. You name a store and you will find it on the miracle mile. I remember when the Orange Plaza was the only mall and that area was all woods. You drove down a little and there were some supermarkets. The police station/ court was also surrounded by woods now the Galleria is there. I got a ticket way back when for speeding and court was once a week at night, now it is a full time business. Monday thru Friday all day long.

Just like the Town of Newburgh, building going on anywhere and everywhere they find an empty space in the name of progress. Talk about a sub-station. Just between Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Home Depot
the town must get half their budget from fines and arrests at this little triangle. Their they should put a sub-station. Just my 2 cents........Ray

Well, I could be wrong but...

When a Town talks about a "District" that is code word for a TAX!!!

Again, I do not know the particulars for the town of Walkkill, but in government vernacular a business DISTRICT probably means an extra assesment (TAX) on businesses which will then be used to meet the police budget.

For example a "Fire District" is not just a response area for a fire department it represents the authority to Tax the residents and businesses served by that fire department even if the "District" spans multiple taxing authorities.

Sorry, but politicians don't look at public safety the way we do. To them its not about how service is provided, but how it gets paid for. This "District" does not mean a new substation, preceinct, or anything real like that. It means more money, which hopefully, but not necessarily means more police coverage.
