I've been lately noticing coms from "Air 1" with the police here in Lexington. Wondering if they got a new chopper, or have I just missed it in the past.
It's my understanding that "Air 1" is going to be used by the police and fire divisions of Fayette Co. government. Some type of deal with grants and funding. It will be interesting to see how the FD utilizes that type of equipment.
Frequently they will fly in the evenings, just look for the beam of light piercing the night sky... the key is to listen for ground units to call for AIR 1 to back them on calls.... for example AIR 1 took flight to aid in the search for the suspect from recent bank robberies... Updated info: Their "regular" schedule is primarily Friday and Saturday evenings.
There is no page for the Air Support Unit at the Lexington Police web site: LexPD
Up again today, doing the same thing. Working with undercover officers again.
Operating on Ch8 today, however I couldn't make out any comms from the ground untis, only the Air unit. Suppose they were just using Simplex for some reason.
Pending bad wx AIR 1 should be flying until 0300 or so.... backing-up ground units at the sobriety checkpoints..... listen on normal dispatch channels....
Normal dispatch channels when on normal assignments, depending on what area they are in. As for the ops with undercover units, I've heard them on channel 6, and Channel 8 (which is simplex, so I could only hear their side of the comms).
The frequencies for each channel are in the database.
