I was talking to my neighbor who works for port authority operations - he said that the port authority cops are getting a new radio system or an upgrade to their current system? Does anyone know more about this and will it still be monitorable after the PA is finished. He said that all he knows is that it is still going to be 800 trunked like it is now. I wondered if they were going digital 800 trunked as part of the new system or not, and if they were getting all new radios? I don't know if its gonna stay an edacs system or not.

thanks

They have yet to include LAG in the EDACS system they have now. The PA is crying that it has run out of money. Doesn't seam like they could go shopping for a new radio system.

The Port of Authority of NY & NJ running out of money.

Well that is the second biggest laugh I ever had. First was that Open Sky would work.

Rebanding might be giving them an excuse to obtain a new system. All the 866-868 freqs. will be shifted down 15/mhz. Some of the radios are not capable of rebanding and get replaced by Sprint Nextel. The Ports system is old and has been around a long time. They lost it 9/11 when the WTC was attacked by killer muslim terrorists.

Sprint is not paying for upgrades to digital or anything like that.

PAPD Radio System

Hey hey, I just came across this post. I just programmed the PAPD 800 Trunked system into my BC796, and not much luck so far. I'm in New Rochelle, NY, not too far away, but I'm not grabbing any transmissions. I'm not certain if I have it programmed correctly - I opted for the AFS talkgroup codes instead of the decimal hex format. I'll find out I guess.

Also, I noticed that when the scanner did stop on a frequency in the PAPD pool, it indicated APCO25 - so maybe that is the new "upgrade" that people are referring to.

Eventhough some use the 800 system, like the Lincoln Tunnel, they are still heard on UHF.

I'm well aware of your excellent site but I'm looking to find out which facilities still use the conventional system as their primary system as opposed to having switched completely to the EDACS system.

I think that you're missing what I am saying. Eventhough an agency has been using the 800 system, they are still heard on their own or the Central Police Desk freqs. The Lincoln Tunnel, the three S.I. Bridges, the GW Bridge, the Bus Terminal, etc. Don't exclude one system for another. That's why even on my old(er) BC780 I have both the EDACS and the conventional freqs in the same bank/system folder so that I do not miss anything.

Ok...I think i got you. But it is not simulcast, right? Isn't one of the systems considered primary at a facility? By primary I mean... the one that would be the go-to in an emergency....the one that jobs would be dispatched on...etc.

Something is up with the PAPD Edacs system. I live near Newark Airport and have listened to NIA for years (orig on 453.650 then on the Edacs system). I just realised that I have not heard anything for a few days on the Edacs system. I checked out the control channel and I am hearing that. I locked out the cc and scanned the voice channels and I have not heard anything. No repeaters keying up, no white noice of digital, nothing. BTW I am listening to the rebanded freqs.

NYSCAN, to answer you question.... All the PA facilitys have the 800 Mhz Edacs Trunked equipment. However the usage of the system varies. For example Newark Airport and JFK are mostly on the system. The other facilitys like GWB, LT, etc mostly use the UHF freqs. BUT at times you will hear the locations come up on 800 trunked.

Nothing haveing to do with PAPD is engraved in stone. N2NOV gave you everything you need. You are just going to have to listen and decide for your self what you want to scan.

And right now something is happening with the 800 Edacs system and Nwk and JFK are no place to be heard.

You are talking about four separate systems. For the main PAPD operations, use the first system with seven frequencies only. The others are supposed to be specific for their locations unless we get definitive word otherwise.

All I know is the new york city transit authority ordered 125 dig/analog delay modules from our company, some of which I built. They said this is only a portion of the equipment ordered to revamp their comm.system since 9/11

Union: JetBlue Terminal
Is Radio Dead Zone
Updated: Tuesday, 23 Jun 2009, 12:25 AM EDT
Published : Tuesday, 23 Jun 2009, 12:19 AM EDT

Reported by LISA EVERS
MYFOXNY.COM EXCLUSIVE - Millions of passengers will pass through the JetBlue terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport this year. But according to some police officers, something is missing from the terminal that could put travelers in danger -- police radio reception.

We know what it's like to walk into a place where there is a dead zone service. That is what happens to radios when Port Authority police officers walk into the terminal, which is one of the airport's busiest.

The union that represents Port Authority cops says that officers are given Nextel phones to compensate for the loss of radio signal when they enter the terminal so they can talk to each other and the dispatcher.

The union president, Paul Nunziato, says an urgent radio call that would normally take seconds on the police radios now takes minutes while officers scroll down a phone list on the Nextel. He also says cops sometimes can't even get through.

A police report obtained exclusively by Fox 5 News shows that help to an 85-year-old woman last week with breathing difficulties was delayed by three minutes due to no Nextel service. And reports showed delays in response time in two separate gun incidents this month along.

Another problem is that cops or paramedics who also respond can't easily communicate with the cops inside.

Port Authority officials say the terminal is safe and that the agency is continuing to enhance the safety measures. The authority says it is installing a new airport communication system and has deployed extra police to airport terminals to ensure safety.

The Port Authority told Fox 5 that a radio repeater system will be installed within the next 6 to 12 months.

The union says they'll believe it when they see it.
