To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

It appears they also fixed the Sub-Group Feature / Sub-Group "Alternatives", so now when "Alternatives" is un-checked, no audio is passed until it hears the correct 2-tone group. Now my G5 is a pager again! :D:D Thank you Unication!

Is there a pdf on how to work this new pps?
The one on the website is the old one and doesn't help me.
I can't figure out how to import conventional stuff from RRdb like we used to do on 3.29 or whatever it was

I exported and imported all my files. Most work, but the most important and recent ones do not. They were most recently programmed with V00-03-16-29F and run 1.34. I tried to read directly and its no better. Looks like a problem from PPS D to F?

Ok, i think I am going to keep our fleet at 3.16. 4;.0 has been a huge pain for us and it doesn't look like its getting any better with each revision.

Unication has said, V3 PPS files lack compatibility with the V4 PPS, if you are upgrading to V4 you need to create a new PPS. The export/import advice was for those moving from V4.30 to V4.31.

While some will work, it will not provide access to features V4 was designed to fix and/or add.

If it works for you, great.

The majority of the issues (though not all) I've noticed happen when people try to use the V3 PPS code plug in V4 and do not create new V4 code plugs. I have not had any issues with the programming on my G5 using V4.

For many (most?) this simply isn't practical. I have numerous customers that I have to maintain and to have to go rewrite them all would take a monumental amount of time.

Not to mention some hobbyist profiles I have seen would take them hours to rebuild. I suspect a lot of folks are going to skip this release if their program cannot be read out of a radio into the new software.

Unication seems to be in a bubble as to how much time it takes to build a profile.

Totally agree with you and understand what you are saying and where frustration comes from. My comments are directed towards those who want the best of both worlds, want to upgrade, but fail to follow the instructions given on how to properly do it.

If you are updating do it correctly, otherwise stick with what you have.

I don't doubt that if I decided to dedicate the time to this and created a new profile, it would work fine. What I am saying is I cannot justify this time. We support fire departments and even to move their department pagers to this new platform would mean we either charge them for HOURS of programming or we eat it internally.

Even if I just take our internal file that we provide to hobby folks, that's a lot of programming to capture what they want to hear around here on TxWarn.

What is so critical from 3.16 to 4.0 that would make someone want to start from scratch with their programming? I'm asking that as a serious question. I have read through the files but feel like I am missing some feature or fix that is critical.

Two of the main features I like and use as I program other pagers is the ability to store multiple systems in the C tab public resources and import from there to multiple code plugs, rather than reload/import the same system and TGs multiple times.

Also, the separation of talkgroups by system, rather than having thousands of TGs, some duplicated which weren't allowed in the old V3 PPS, to search through when adding them to a code plug.

Where do you see this?

This is the info I see:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • New units shipped June 2023 and after can ONLY be programmed using PPS version 4.0 and do not support programming with any past PPS versions.
  • New PPS 4.0 is compatible with old and new pagers and will be the current PPS for all G-Series G2-G5 Pagers moving forward.
  • CP Files created in older PPS versions can be converted to the new PPS 4.0

What I typed was what Unication put out when it was first released in the now disbanded Beta Group in Facebook about six months ago, version 4.20. Also, converted and imported to are two different things.

Not to mention that in order to work with the PPS 4.0, you must upgrade to FW 1.3 or higher...but wait there is no FW on the Unication site to update.

I misspoke , 1.3 the FW in which Ray sent. I am still not sure if I would invest the time to recreate hours of work here in creating the new 4.0 PPS.

While I look forward to any type of improvements, I fail to understand of why Unication migration to a new PPS involves hours of work in part of the users. Coders should have been able to manage this process easier.
