Had a PRO 96 and had no trouble uploading data from RR.com into the scanner

But, using the RR data loaded into the ARC 500 software, I cannot even program conv data.

I bought the scanner off EBAY used, and don't know if I need to clear it first completely of old data, and maybe that's part of the problem. Have erased the memory and uploaded all conv data to scanlist one several times and my 197 will not scan. Sometimes I've gotten the not enabled message too. Seems to have data on it that I do not recognize as Colorado even. Just about given up. Even tried some remedies on this forum, but to no avail.

Can anyone spend some time to help me get up and running? Really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

It is a huge learning curve! I use Win500 which is well worth the money. Don't give up. I'm sure you will get help here
or in the Radio Shack forum.

First question is whether ARC can read the radio. That would hint whether there is 2 way datalink.
If you can't read the radio, you can't program the radio.

You have to use the USB cable RS sells instead of the serial cable that the 96 could use. Use the end that looks like a stereo connection (3 conductors) without the short jumper/adapter that comes with the cable.

How to make the s/w play is out of my realm. I use Win500 also.

ARC500 is advertised as supporting the '197. I suggest joining the ARC500 group on Yahoo Groups. Plenty of expertise over there, and the software developer is the moderator, so it's like having "factory support."

Yes, get Win500. I won't program my 197 without it. You can't beat the free trial.

Also, you can read in data from your Pro-96 with Win500. Win500 will ask you a few questions and then create the file needed to be directly transfered to the Pro-197. This will get you started scanning right away.
