New PRO 96 owner

I have some questions about this scanner. First is, I pulled it out of the box and the thing had almost ni weight to it. It weighs about as much as my much smaller PRO 83. Is this how it is supposed o feel? I expected a scanner that does so many things to be little heavier.

Also, I can pick up radio transmissions from a Motorola handheld from a few feet away but as soon as I step out side the room, I lose it. I can hear it fine on another handheld, but the scanner won't pick it up. I have confirmed freqs on both radios and I am sure that I am monitoring the right one. The ATT is not on, I simply cannot pick up the radio from more than a few feet away. What is up with this???

Without batteries, it's pretty light. Forget whatever you're doing with the portable since a close signal can do all sorts of strange things with reception. Hit the WX button and see if you can pick up the NWS broadcasts. If so, you're radio is fine. If not, take it back.
