What if Uniden developed a product that would equal the V-Folders of GRE.

Create an attachment (small enough to carry with you) that you could attach to the scanner through the computer cable. You could previously load system setups into the new attachment from your computer via Butel or USAD or some other software, and carry it with you. (lets call this new scanner product UPM-Uniden Portable Memory or PDM Portable Dynamic Memory, for instance PDM-246T)

Then when you needed the other setups while traveling or whatever, you could connect it to the scanner and use the Master - Slave function to load the system setups of your choice. Similar to a memory stick in digital cameras as far as removable memory goes. Maybe we would be able to save multiple setups on the "PDM" then upload them as needed. Kinda makes you able to travel without the laptop.

This could be similar to the VFolders the GRE uses just as an external device for the Uniden models....... I guess I am thinking more along the lines of the BC246T, but it I guess it could be set up in banks and channels for older models. How about it UPMan?

Oh yeah, if Uniden (or GRE) uses this idea, I want my royalty check!

Seriously though, I think this would be a great product!!!!! Just my idea though. What do you guys think?

Almost 100 views and no opinions! Come on.....what do you guys think about the idea?

Maybe because nobody wants to repeat the email thread on this same subject? BUT... if you want...

Actually, (a V-folders feature) would be EASY to do it without violating the patents (I think). On the BCD396T, just have a way to load different config files on power-up that contain different system files in the various configs.

I mentioned this months ago on the BCD396T list, so if there are any
royalties, I should get them. ;->

Sadly, however, Uniden has not taken to the idea yet. Sorry, but Quick
Keys are not a substitute for V-folders. 100 SQKs, however, will help
much more than just 10! There is no way I can make the 10 SQKs on the
BC246T work even close to the PRO-96 V-folders. There is just too much
button pushing (LO/UL) to do in addition to the SQKs.

As for patents, if what you said were true, Trunktrackers would not even
exist - especially Control Channel trunking. You don't think Motorola
has a patent on their trunking protocol. There are ways around patents!
(And Uniden has some great attorneys who usually find them)

Same for the Close Call. You don't think that it's anything like the
Opto Xplorer sweep feature? BUT, there is JUST ENOUGH difference that
it's not patent infringement (mainly the requirement that you press a
button - the frequency/CTCSS/CDCSS is not 'automatically' displayed!

I will add to my email comments that the PRO-97 is RUMORED to have done away with the button press aspect of the CC(SS) feature. This will either invite a patent infringement suit or done away with the patent issue alltogether.

Is it possible that they're getting away with it because the Pro-97 it's ALWAYS displaying the frequencies? Therefore, the part or patent about the screen being blank and suddenly displaying a hit automatically is a moot point.

Just a thought....

i think it is the secret feature that the Pro96 was supposed to have

Yeah, I always thought that too!

Maybe one day, someone will "hack" into the Pro-96 and activate that feature if it's embedded there somewhere.

That's just a thought, no need for lectures or flames about legalities or improbabilities..... 8)

To stay on topic, I would prefer a standard SDIO slot on a scanner for accomplishing the task of V-Folders and such.
I know there's not as much money to be made by using industry standard stuff instead of some proprietary module but one can dream....

I also know nothing about the email discussion, so this is new for me.

The ability to upload from, say, a thumb or flash drive directly to the scanner would be cool. Either a cable that connects from the scanner to the drive, or a USB port on the side of the scanner. Guess we want a single device that does everything, but I think this would be cool.

Good point! They aren't displaying the frequency when it is captured OR making you press a button to display the frequency.

Maybe GRE did this to get around both Opto's patent AND UNIDEN'S PATENT that they no doubt filed after finding the workaround :!: After all, Uniden did patent the patent workaround they found with trunking.

I love the memory stick idea! That would be great if you could just carry around memory sticks with different configurations on it for traveling. Have it in a kind of "plug and play" set up.

It could probably even open up a whole new market for pre-programmed cards! Programmed by State,County, or City.

I replied with a comment that agreed with you, and got a little more specific. Instead of a proprietary device, a thumb drive/flash drive interface was my suggestion. However, I do agree in principle about a field-uploadable file storage.

not neccessarily joe, just have cable ~1" or so to run from scanner's remote port to a "box" that you can slide the stick into and clone it to the scanner. then when your done, take out the cable and close the prtective covering on the remote port.

That's about what I was thinking. Either a box that you insert the flash drive into, or have the scanner be able to "browse" the directory structure of the drive (probably WAY more complicated)...dunno. Just one of those "would be cool" ideas.

I don't think many people would want to carry around yet another 'box'.

If you're going to do that, just release a program for a PDA with an interface cable.
