I got an email today from someone that works for the city. They told me that Tuscaloosa PD would be switching to some sort of digital radio system. I dont have any more information right now, but i'll pass it along as I get it.
After speaking to the radio shop, my understanding is this: They are creating some type of in-house system with a coded squelch that makes it inaccessible to outside listeners. Sorry about that; I'm sure it has to due with increased security precautions in light of recent events.
What is coded squelch? and can they really use it to keep us scanner listeners from hearing them?
My guess is that they are talking about a digital version of a "PL" tone
that would prevent anyone without a properly programmed radio from
accessing the system. If that's the case scanner listening shouldn't
be affected. If they are talking about some sort of digital voice encryption,
that's another story!
