"Soon Monroe Police officers will be able to communicate with other departments, from inside their patrol cars.
With help from State Police, the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security is buying a computer system for the Monroe Police Department. A computer unit will be installed at Monroe dispatch, and the other out in the field. The computer system works with the radio frequencies, so that police officers can use their car radios, to talk to other police departments from their patrol cars. Chief Ron Schleuter says this system is important because his department had trouble communicating with other police departments during Hurricane Katrina. He says, "we have been discussing this for the last couple of years, about the problem with interoperability of communications and what this will do is give us a tool. We can actually talk to other agencies in the surrounding area. When we've got a cooperative agreement that we're assisting them." The system should be up and running in about two months."
Does anyone have any idea what kind of system they are talking about? Right now they are on all VHF analog frequencies. My first impression of this read is that they are going to set up some kind of "patch" (Like when you see areas go from analog to digital, alot of times they will have a patch from the analog on the digital and the digital on the analog).
