New radios/controllers for CHP

This is rolling out slowly as budget allows.

The first wave has been purchased and is being installed.

The hand control looks almost like a game controller.

This is the integrated controller with head's up display for the patrol cars that
they have selected:

CHP will have up to 5 Kenwood radio decks in the trunk for Low band CHP, and
interoperability with other agencies like CDF on VHF and UHF for the old state
police channels, all controlled by the TACNET system, along
with siren, lighting, radar, and touch screen computer for running plates.

Built in crossband repeater capability for up to 5 radios.

Air bag friendly, eliminates clutter.

Runs on a microcomputer Intel processor and Windows2K.

The extenders are supposed to be moving to 700Mhz. as well.

Star Wars meets California Highway Patrol.

Probably.

Right now they just put in the TacNet front end and the new Kenwood radio decks to
replace the existing GE/MA/com decks.

I think they are re-using most of the existing lighting, siren, radar, MDT radio (where applicable), and VHF pyramid repeaters until 2009 when 700mhz becomes available
in California. Pyramid already makes a 700Mhz extender.

The coolest thing is the hand controller(looks like my online gaming controller), where they can control most functions even in black-out conditions with the screen dark, and the fact that there is a hands-free microphone option for pursuits, as well as voice commands for controlling warning equipment.

That Visteon thing looks pretty cool....wonder if it will crap out in real world use. They need to integrate a license plate reader too.

CHP has been field testing it for a year, so I would hope they have any reliability/bugs
worked out.

The technology exists for the ccd reader.

Just a matter of $$$

Maybe with the new technology they will actually call in their car stops digitally with
a GPS tag.

I saw a CHP Dodge Charger on display at the state fair with this system installed. I took pics of the outside of the car but I couldn't get a good shot of the inside due to a glare off the window and the doors were locked.

Request for Proposals.

I don't think the Visteon was part of the RFP. Have to double check. It just talks about a "serial controlled box" but not much else.

There's no link, as the person who provided it is a reseller/installer of lighting equipment. I've checked the state website and have a very hard time navigating it, and wasn't able to find this contract.

There's also other contracts for VHF low, VHF high mobiles, and VHF high portables.

Recruitment divison for sure. I don't think that I'd see an officer doing a bumper pace in that bling mobile. Either way, if a sworn officer is driving it, he can sign you up....a ticket that is.

The most amusing car stop I've seen was a DARE officer using a volkswagen bug.

I just went on a ride along with Rocklin PD and they have the tacnet controls installed in their cars with a flat panel touch screen mounted on the dash.

Officers love it, and it works GREAT. Very Reliable, I don't hear rocklin complaining about MDTs crapping out unlike other departments. Sounds great too, certain sounds (alerts, etc) are directed to the rear speakers and radio in the front. Very cool.

Their install works with Radar, Dashcam, Radio, Lighting (both vehicle lighting and light bars, etc), Siren, MDT, AM/FM Radio, and vehicle systems (diagnostics and such).

the only complaint i heard was that there's no 10-key part on the keyboard (which would help in running plates) just numbers across the top. much like a laptop keyboard.

touch screen is very accurate too, which officers loved, some wished that it would be a little bigger though.

talked to a chp officer this morning at work...said other chp officers dont like the new tacnet system. he said everything is controled by it (lightbar, radio etc) and if it goes out, they all go out. just his take...

If installed like the other systems, there should be the normal radio heads/control devices as a backup. I know that the P54 and another system operates this way. Nothing like getting an ABORT/RETRY/FAIL going down the highway...

FWIW: Whelen's MPC03 is TACNET compatiable, so they may be trying to make some in roads more into CA. Personally, I feel that they have superior LED products, but thats because I love them. The day that CA goes to someone other than Federal Signal...

I don't believe CHP has any backup control heads in their system.

Everything is controlled/interfaced through TacNet.

No backup, if it goes down, we get another car. Not real hot on the Tac radio other than it has an FM stereo built in. We also had problems with the repeater system on that unit, not sure if it was the repeater system or the radio head. We only had one test unit in our office and it's been there for a while.
