New RS Pro-2096

RadioShack PRO-2096 Scanners have arrived at the dealership store I manage. Walk-in introductory price 449.99 List $499.99. No phone orders. Don't ask us to mail one! You MUST visit the store. Ask for Scannerman or Smoky. Only eight in stock at the moment!

My first impressions are WOW. Loud audio for mobile environment. Comes with DIN mounting kit for in-dash mounting and a standard bracket. Programing/IF jack is on the front of the scanner. Front panel display lights up like the PRO-96. Terrific for low ambient light operation. Today I spend some time reading the manual to absorb the features. COme visit us to see this new scanner.

Hello All !

I live in Baltimore.

Is there anybody close to this store who comes up towards Baltimore occasionally and would be willing to pick one of these babys up for me and bring it along on their next trip to Baltimore ?

I'd love to buy one locally.

If only a RS close to the Baltimore area would make the same offer that the one in Dunkirk has done.

It will take me 2-3 hours one way to drive to Dunkirk.

How about it ? Any Baltimore area "Shacks" making the same deal ?

I think he was referring to the $50 discount the OP was advertising; the list on the scanner is $499.99 and I assume that's what the regular stores are selling it for.

I'm really considering getting one, but I don't think my 785 would sell for $250 without a digital card, and if I HAD a digital card I wouldn't need to sell it

I'd just buy the card, but they are still way expensive and I like the 9600 ability and the AGC on the Pro-96/2096.

I haven't been able to find a digital card for the 785/250s. I was thinking of picking up a used 785 someone had for sale but had to cancel the thought due to lack of the card. Personally, I'm waiting patiently for the new Uniden. After reading about the features on the portable BC396 coming out late summer, I wouldn't even consider anything else. It solves all the problems of trunking system limitations that everything up to this point present. I'm just not sure when it'll hit the market...but I'll wait.

ScannerMaster has the BCi25D in stock for $249.95. To me, that's more than I want to pay since I can still get my intended traffic (AACo). I'm thinking I probably should just wait for the 396, but I wish wish wish they'd have planned a simultaneous base/mobile version!

Absolutely! From all the comments I've read, it seems more people are waiting for the base/mobile than for the portable. They obviously have the numbers the other way around though so are doing the portable first. Yeah, $250 for a digital card is the same as not carrying it - way too expensive.

Scanner Master $250 for the card and $330 for the 785 = $580 and yet they sell the 796 for $520. Makes not a lick of sense.

Yeah, the problem with it was, the 796/296 came out so quickly after the 785/250 that there was no chance for the price to drop and there is practically no demand for the BCi25D. Anyone who could afford to buy them together would have just bought a 796 because the net price was the same or less than buying the two pieces.

I haven't looked around to see if anyone else is stocking it, and I haven't scanned Ebay recently... but to me, I'd only buy it if it was $100 or so... I'll just wait till the end of the year and get the 396.

Right...and as I had mentioned to you, the 2096 has that long list of missing features that the BC396 family has along with the need for way more than 10 trunking nets that are limited by the scanners on the market now. That dynamic memory feature might just be the most important aspect of the new Unidens. But...to each his own.

Otherwise, I'll have to wait for a sale.... and who knows when that might be.

Hey Al, I just read a feature summary over at Strong Signals... the 396T is going to have an Automatic Threshold and an Automatic Gain Control! Two more reasons to wait if you wanna stick with Uniden.

Also, there ARE restrictions on the number of TG's per system, but they are better than current scanners.

Systems: 400
Channel Groups per system: 20
Channels per trunked system: 200
Channels per conventional system: Limited only by remaining memory

So, it's twice as many as currently available on a 796D/296D or the 96/2096.

Still looks like you'll be able to have every DC, MD, and the statewide DE trunks loaded all at once, with about 2000 channels to spare for conventional stuff! How freakin' cool is that gonna be? 8)

Uniden 396

The only thing that would make it better is if we had some software for it like Win96.

You can bet that Butel will have software for the 396 family of scanners very shortly after they hit the market. They already have software for the 246 which uses a similar type of dynamic memory.

Llwellyn, there is a thread here on RR about the 396 and one of the participants is UPMan who works for Uniden.
