New Scanner and Clueless

I just got a new Radioshack Pro-404 scanner and basically I'm just interested in picking up local police/fire chatter in my area. I believe I have managed to enter the frequencies into my scanner but I definitey don't know how to properly scan/monitor them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you hit the SCAN button, what happens after that point?

Thanks for the welcome. I actually managed to get the scanner working the way I want it to over the past few days which has been great. But not all of a sudden when I try to switch from manual to scan mode I get a message that reads ALL ch L-out. In the book that came with the scanner it says this means "all channels locked out during scan or marine band search". I dont recall locking any channels and when looking at the display screen there is no indication of a lock on my programmed channels. So i'm not reallly sure what to do.

I saw the manual on-line and it suggets this to clear your lock outs

Removing Lock-outs from All Frequencies in a Service
Bank
1. Hold down L/O/L/O RVW for about two seconds
during a Service Bank or Signal Stalker II search.
L-r appears.
2. While holding down TUNE/CLEAR, press L/O.
FLo ALL–CL appears for about two seconds.
Then the display alternates with YES ---
Ent and
No --CLEAr.
3. Press ENT. L-r EMPty appears. The scanner clears
lock-outs from all frequencies in the Service Bank.
