Does your FIL (Father-in-Law) have an existing scanner? If you purchase a $$$ SDS-200 $$$ to compliment his existing scanner, consider getting an amplified antenna splitter (such as a Stridsberg) so he can operate both scanners. If not, giving a $700+ scanner is VERY generous of you (and your wife) as a gift for Father's Day.

Check the RadRef database to see if the talkgroups of interest are encrypted. I saw a small handful of police dispatch channels listed as "DE" so Murphy's Law dictates that one of those is what he would want to monitor the most.

I think he means if everything is encrypted, there is no reason to blow big bucks on the likes of an SDS 100 or 200 when a much cheaper analog scanner could still be used to pick other stuff up. (Like the Uniden BCD 160N)
