New scanner in Hinton Alberta.

I am going to buy my son a scanner for use in Hinton Alberta. I looked on the database but can’t tell if there is much to listen to in the Public Safety field. I have read that RCMP is encrypted and fire channels are quiet. I am in Ontario so really I need some local help, if available. Please and thanks in advance.

Hinton RCMP is still on PACS and can be scanned for now. They are set to migrate to AFRRCS by the end of May and will be encrypted at that time. I believe Yellowhead County Fire is on AFRRCS and should be in the clear.
