My wife purchased a PRO-528 Scanner for me for Christmas after I express an interest in listening to air traffic control / police / fire calls in my home office.

I am completely new to the scanner community and would like to learn more on how to utilize my new toy. I am not going to presume to ask you folks for a step-by-step guide, but if someone would like to point me in the right direction as to good material to read in order to learn the basics, I would be very greatful.

I am not asking someone to program my scanner for me - rather, I would like to learn to understand the basics and then do some experimental programming myself.

Here is what I have so far... I have the scanner (PRO-528), the PC interface cable, the ARC-433 software (registered) and an account on the RadioReference website. I have read the manuals for all, but in most cases I am having difficulties understanding the basics and thus the manuals are a bit overwelming.

As an Oregon resident, I thought I would start here (live in Milwaukie, southest of Portland).

Thanks in advance.

The useless (oops User) Manuals are usually a lost cause until you understand Scanning.

Look here for starts: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Main_Page

Then here: http://radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&stid=41

Those will get you started.

I have learned to "learn the software" stick with the software just play with it, play with it, play with it. I had a hard few weeks but learning it will help you later. Don't worry about breaking it you can always reset it. Then use the manual to look up settings. This has worked for my differant scanners. Then you can ask spacific questions if you have them.
Just my 2 cents
