Hey fellow iowans I’m in need of a new scanner beings I can only hear 1 county I’m interested in and that’s Crawford county! Audubon, Carroll, Guthrie, and Shelby are P25 even though database says there not I listen to them on my phone but I don’t want to keep doing that! So my question is what’s the best fit I wanna listen to analog still, p25,isics and trunk systems thanks in advance

If any of the sites you want to monitor are simulcast, a 996P2 may not be the best choice. A radio designed to decode simulcast signalling like a SDS 100/200 or a Unication G series would likely be the better choice. If you decide on the 996P2, make sure you buy from a vendor that accepts returns, preferably without a restocking fee.

Looking at the counties that the OP listed, they appear to use conventional channels, not trunked systems. While there are some state agencies on the statewide system (ISICS), with users in the listed counties, the specific sites in the listed counties do not appear to be simulcast. I can't positively verify that, since there are no location specific licenses listed, only a license indicating that the frequencies used are part of the state's allocation. So, as long as there are no simulcast issues, the 996P2 should work well.

Yup, the point is that the buyer needs to know the architecture of the systems he wants to monitor. He's already noted that the RRDB data for some systems is inaccurate / outdated, so it is imperative for him to do the research to avoid buying the wrong equipment. Hopefully someone else with direct experience in the area can help. The good thing is that ISCIS in the more rural parts of Iowa tends to use multicast sites which obviously are not going to have simulcast issues. There is a RACOM EDACS site in the county that uses Provoice, so that might be a consideration. RACOM is supposedly converting its system to P25 simulcast in some areas.

Most of those agencies around you are getting on ISICS. It's always questionable when they add sites if they will do simulcast or not. Rural as that area is tend not to do simulcast as often but you can also find plenty who do. Our friends from out of State make good points for you to research. As for EDACS those have been slowly going away but who knows in areas where they don't have P25 - I would think those would go away too but maybe not as quick.

I talked to my local Radio Shack owner in Denison Iowa, he strongly recommended I go with the TRX-1 he has always treated me good and very knowledgeable! I can hear Audubon County on Broadcastify website there talk group is 15901 but there not yet registered or updated with RR database I suppose it’s just a matter of time until they do though! I appreciate all of your Guys inputs I really truly do!

Keep in mind that if you ever want to monitor a simulcast system, that particular radio will likely be unsat. But if there are no simulcast systems within range, it will perform adequately. However, there is no upgrade possible to enable Provoice on the RACOM EDACS system site in Denison.
