Im thinking of buying a BCD996T but was wondering if there are new scanners coming out in the near future, read somewhere that uniden was putting out a new scanner in mid 09. Wondering what features these new scanners would have over the 996T ??? Would they be able to pic previously encrypted (aegis, etc.) systems?. If all the counties are starting to go digital and encrypt what would be the point in investing in a 996T if its not gonna pic up newer systems ? Anyone think these new scanners that will come out will be worth the wait or are the only new features gonna be gingerbread (lights, bells, whistles). New to this hobby and have purchased a BCT15 and its a great scanner but do have a few areas near me that are digital and would like to hear what others may think. Live in South Jersey.

New Uniden Scanners

The BCD996T is capable of scanning everything that can be scanned (within its scan range) for what you are seeking. Nothing at the consumer level will be able to decode encryption.

The new scanners coming out by Uniden are handhelds (whereas the BCD996T is a mobile/base model). They are updates of existing models (BCD396T and BC346T).

Hotdjdave told you all you need to know...at least as far as Uniden is concerned. Keep in mind that, at least for the foreseeable future, no scanner will EVER be able to decode encrypted transmissions. Most agencies keep their everyday regular dispatching transmissions unencrypted. However, they may encrypt their surveillance TGs. I said most...but not all. Then there's other digital voice methods. Some agencies use EDACS ProVoice which, unless MA/COM suddenly feels generous and releases information about that system, will never be monitorable. Frankly, I think any agency that goes completely encrypted is shooting themselves in the foot. While there are people out there that use scanners to aid them in committing crimes...most are good people who will aid police and fire if they hear something going on. Back in the day, when I got my first scanner shortly after high school, whenever the police department put out a BOLO on a stolen car, I copied down the license plate and vehicle description in case I saw it. There may come a day when almost all law enforcement is encrypted...and maybe the ban on decoding encrypted communications will change...although I doubt it.
