New scanners?

Thanks for the info, looks like my next scanner will be a BCD396T.

The only thing I'm worried about is how hard it is to program. I have a BC245XLT that I had a little trouble programming it to do trunk tracking, but also have three Pro-95's that I use win95 to program with and with the software they're a snap, but from what I've seen on here even with the software the BCD396T is kind of tricky to program.

The BCD396T menus and setup are both pretty close to the BC246T from what I understand.

While I don't have a 396, I do have a 246. After a couple of hours of reading the manual, browsing the Radio Reference forums, and playing with the radio & software, I got it figured out.

The menus do away with the age-old problem of many different keystrokes to accomplish a simple task. With the 246 you simply go into the menu, scroll to what you want to change, and change it. That simple.

I'll never go back now that I have a taste of the easy menus and great idea of dynamic memory.

Please don't let that be the reason for settling for any other radio. The 396 has features that are incredible!!! Stuff thats never been seen in another scanner!!!

10 custom searches, fuhgedaboutit!!!

In these searches you can search for control channels. You know what that means???? Say the trunking control channel is 868.2500. You set the custom search from 868.0 to 868.5, then set Control channel only search (super easy to do). Then when it starts searching, it hits the control channel next thing ya know youre scanning!!

This is also a good method to find trunked systems you never knew about!!!

There is too many features in the 396, unless you cant afford it, there is no reason not to get this radio.

If it is difficult for you to program, thats why this forum is here!! 8)

I and others will agree, you should go w/ 396T!! Its smaller, thinner, cooler, newer, and full of features, and the blue backlight is sweet. 8) I never owned a 296, this is all hearsay.

Its well worth the $20-50 bucks extra, trust me.

Once you get past the "bank/channel" thing, it's easy to program. And it makes more sense.
