I’m looking to upgrade my SDR hardware. I now use multiple V5 Nooelecs. Looking to try out the Airspy product. For SDRTrunk would you recommend the Airspy HF+ Discovery or Airspy R2?

Looking to try out the Airspy product. For SDRTrunk would you recommend the Airspy HF+ Discovery or Airspy R2?

Hf + Discovery covers 0.5 kHz to 31 MHz plus 60 to 260 MHz
R2 covers 24 – 1700 MHz native RX range, down to DC with the SpyVerter option.

If your not into Hf, but more scanning trunked systems or anything else between 24 to 1.7Ghz, I would go with either the Airspy Mini (6 and 3 MSPS IQ output) or the Airspy R2 (10 MSPS IQ output with 2.5 experimental for low power devices). I use a mini with SDRTrunk and getting another any day now.

The HF+ only covers up to 260 MHz (with reduced performance), so you probably want to stick with the R2.

I prefer the Mini as the systems within range of my office have a modest channel spread of about 3 to 5 MHz. There are systems in neighboring jurisdictions that have channel spreads that exceed 6 MHz, thus would require an R2.

Does the Airspy R2 have better sound quality and performance compared to the Nooelec V5?

Sound quality has nothing to do with the dongle, that's all a function of the software you're using. The Airspy R2 or Mini should have better performance compared with the basic RTL dongles. How much better is subjective, and largely depends on your setup and what you're trying to do. If you're only decoding a strong local trunked system, then you really won't notice any performance difference, only the increased bandwidth.
