I am new to scanners and wanted the best, which has been said of the SDS-200. I have watched numerous YouTube videos and read reviews saying this scanner is easy to set up right out of the box and get scanning right away. Not so with this one. I'm not a total idiot, but I ran the zip code directory in the set up. The unit seems to be scanning but after three days of trying the only thing it has picked up is an FM radio station. Do I need to run Sentinel for it to work properly? I needed it quickly so bought from Amazon (which was probably a mistake). The shipping box was pretty banged up and there was little to no packing material inside (I have photos). There didn't seem to be any damage to the box the scanner was packed in. I'm really frustrated. As usual, Amazon sellers are not easy to contact. I don't want to return it, but a $700 non-scanning scanner is a no go. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you're scanning using the database, you'll want to get it hooked up to Sentinel and update the database to a current one. It could be attempting to scan very outdated info - who knows when the card inside was set up.

Make sure you've got the right service types set as well.

The "Nothing to scan" wiki article has some info on common issues

go in thescanner settings and location and set the range for 1 mile or less. Then go into Service types and turn off everything except what you’re interested in. It will scan less and you should hear more.

I updated via Sentinel, and watching more videos. Making a little progress. This thing is not what I would describe as simple. I'm willing to learn learn it. I just needed to know if it was working properly. May have more questions. Thanks

Install Sentinel, update the DB, check for firmware updates as well. Write DB to scanner.
Turn off Close Call, WX priority. Try again.

Welcome to the RR forums!
Use Sentinel to program a favorites list or more containing only what you want to scan. Using the zip code feature will retrieve everything in the RRDB within the range you defined (within and outside your zip code) whether you want to listen to it or not. Even if you're uncomfortable programming FLs on your own you may get lucky & find someone in your area on the Georgia Radio Discussion Forum who is willing to share their Sentinel file with you.

One important database note: Savannah Police are fully encrypted (mode "DE") so you won't be able to pick them up with any receiver not intended to operate on the system. Fire and other city services are clear (mode "D") and can be scanned

Do expect a significant learning curve with the SDS200 especially if you are inexperienced with Uniden's current gen of scanners. Plenty of folks right here on the forums willing to lend you a hand. Once you master the scanner, using it will become second nature to you. I speak from about 7 years experience with the SDS100 (handheld version of your SDS200). They're the best scanners Uniden has made to date but do have their flaws (no scanner is perfect)

Start with this RR wiki:
And finally, the easier to read manuals for your perusal:
SDS100/200 Digital Scanner Manual
Sentinel SDS100/200 Software Manual

I appreciate the tips, and a very nice gentleman from this forum really helping me with this. It's coming along, but there's nothing easy about it!
