I have a hunch that is a system on Fort Irwin.

Sounds military. That would make Fort Irwin or 29 Palms likely suspects. Barstow Marines (MCLB) likely don't have a tower site high enough to be heard in the valley at Baker.

Where EXACTLY were you when you heard the traffic (elevations change a lot within miles of Baker)?

I used to live and work in Baker, and know the area very well.

I was on the Freeway ( I-15 ) the whole time South/North of Baker area and near Yermo exit. (was heading for Las Vegas)
So the elevation was changing the whole time doing those high speed .

That's all the information I have.

I forgot about the new nationwide P25 network they're working on. That started after I left, so it could very well be a part of that, and I would have no input. From your travel locations, it sounds likely that it would be Fort Irwin, but MCAGCC 29 Palms could possibly have hit that area from towers up in the Sheephole Mtns (that line of mtns that run along the northern edge of the base). Unfortunately all I can do is speculate, since I now live 8 hours away from there.

Fort Irwin?

I heard it also while driving on I-15 last Monday near Baker. I noticed it at Mile Post Marker 153, and I could hear it between about 15 miles north of Baker and about 15 miles south of Baker.

The Control channel I heard was 386.5625 showing SID 0296-0101. When someone talked it would go to 387.2625 or 386.300 MHz, and I think 387.7625.
