I am still unsure how the P25 systems work when scanning regarding control channel and talk groups.

Basically I loading the entire database based off my zip then favorited stuff only on my side of town by the precinct or zone

Do I need to have the associated Simulcast in each list? Some of the lists seem to take awhile to scan, especially considering it isn’t scanning the whole system, and only just the zone on my side of town.

After creating this list I’ve kind of decided I am mostly only interested in Sheriff and PD. I’ll probably delete the others.

If you ever desire to scan a system together, it would be best to have one FL for all of them. For example, include law enforcement and fire together for MARCS. Since they use the same control channel(s), that eliminates any possibility of the scanner scanning frequencies, which means a possible miss.

For me, I have one for fire, one for highway patrol, one for police, one for police and fire, and one for fire, highway patrol, and police. So, if I'm interested in fire only, I simply enable that particular FL and everything else is removed.

For the sites, I remove anything that's not labeled as a control channel in the RRDB. No need to scan anything else and waste time.

As setup now, you will miss a lot of traffic. You should have a single favorites list with a single Ohio MARCS system in that favorites list. The talkgroups for the agencies should all be sorted into different departments on the same system with the sites used only once. You are scanning the same sites multiple times which will slow down your scanning and cause you to miss transmissions or cut into the middle of transmissions. While scanning one favorites list, you will miss any traffic occurring in the other favorites lists. If all of the talkgroups are in one system in different departments, the scanner will immediately go to any talkgroup in any department. You can have a second conventional system in the same favorites list for the conventional frequencies. You can sort conventional frequencies in different departments just like you can do with the talkgroups on the MARCS trunked system. You always want to minimize the number of favorites lists, systems, and sites to speed up your scanning.

There is a lot to learn! I have been doing this all of my life and I am still learning. That is looking much better. Has your reception improved? You are not going to receive many Madison County talkgroups without a Madison County site. Try adding the West Jefferson site in Madison County to the 2 Franklin County sites. Generally, you will hear units only on the site where they affiliate. If all traffic were carried on every site, the system would quickly run out of frequencies. What is your city?
