Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to this site here and new to scanning as well. About a month ago I got my first scanner, a Uniden BC246T. It's working great and I got lots of freqs programmed into it. Back home in Edmonton I like listening to the public service trunk. I work as a first responder for the oil patch and when I'm at the drill rig I'm stationed at I listen to all the logging road channels in the immediate area as well as provincial ambulance and Grande Prarie public service. I have a regular radio in my emergency vehicle at work so I can transmit. I understand that scanners don't transmit but are there ways of modding a scanner to do so? And if not...what does folks suggest for a portable radio that a person could program on their own? Is there such a thing? Or do you have to get the radio professionally programmed...

Other than that, I think RR is a great site and I got most of my freqs here through the downloading feature of the ARC246T software which is a real slick and easy way to program the 246T.

Cheers to all.

I guess I should note too that I'm not necessarily interested in transmitting in the 800mhz range although it'd be an extra nice feature to have. For my purposes I'd only wish to transmit up to 500mhz..public safety stuff...and CB. And yes I intend to get my basic license.

just been doing research on getting a RX/TX radio. Right now I'm thinking a dual band VHF/UHF would be appropriate. Of course it need to be programmable (with or without a PC). As for brands I have no idea. I'm guessing the way to go is Motorola but I hear ICOM radios are good too. Any input on these or the Allinco, Kenwood, Yaesu radios?

Well, that's a splendid attitude to take. Despite it, I will answer your questions.

Scanners cannot be modified to transmit. However, most professional transceivers offer at least some limited amount of scanning capability. As for programming, different manufacturers use different methods of delivering their programming software to the end user. Some make it readily available, some don't. The local authorized dealer for any radio you purchase will most assuredly have the ability to program it. We don't discuss here the possibility of acquiring such programming software through other channels, as it's most often illegal to do so.

What do you mean by getting your "basic license" ? Do you mean amateur radio license? This will not allow you to transmit on any frequencies such as "public safety stuff". For that, you require a license from Industry Canada, for the specific frequencies you intend to use. If you intend to broadcast on someone else's system, you also need a letter of permission from the person in charge of that radio system. For example, as an agency which responds into Kananaskis often, my fire department requires a letter of agreement with the person in charge of Firenet in order to use their communications system.

As for radio equipment, I myself use Motorola products exclusively, not for any kind of brand loyalty or anything like that, but rather because it's the best I find in the industry. Others on my department use Kenwood and Vertex equipment, but I still prefer the Batwing design and performance above those others.

You've now received my input, now that I've found some time to be able to reply to you. I will even say 'hello'. As for 'welcome', you need to change the attitude displayed in your last post before I'll welcome you and provide anything further.

Hey Matte, I suppose you're one of those "oldtimers" that knows EVERYTHING hey?
You were "born with scanning in your blood". You wanted to be a cop or a fireman, or even a medic when you were a little boy but you ended up being something else because you didn't make the cut! You're also one of those people that think to yourself why more young people don't get into this hobby and that it's a dieing art that people like you are preserving. You make fun of people that know less about the radio spectrum than yourself and threaten to complain and make complaints to all the agencies involved when you see something you don't think fits the mold. You sneer at people who talk about modding their hardware yet you use modded hardware yourself. You're a lonely man, most likely hated by many. You shake your fist when the neighbourhood kid rides his bike across your precious front lawn and then promptly call EPS to complain about it.

Tell me Matte....how close am I?

HAHAHA

Rigmedic, are you getting lonely and itchy out in the camps or something? Where did you come from?

Oldtimer? What are you a "young whipper snapper"? With sex, liquor and meth in your blood?

Er.. no, I don't think I want the stress/emotional baggage that comes with the job. Plus the pay isn't too great.

Again, no... What do you consider old? I am not middle aged or anything. And if you are putting yourself out there as an example of the "young people" we may be missing in the "hobby", we're not missing a great deal. I use hobby generally here, because I know there are many here like myself that have a somewhat fractional professional stake in scanners and radio...

If you are talking about your thread in the ICOM forum where you are discussing modding your ham handheld (what's your Canadian amateur radio service call sign anyhow friend?) for broadcasting on public safety frequencies like provincial ground and "air ambulance", then yes. As a licensed amateur radio operator myself, I find people of your cut to be willing to flaunt rules to get what you want and damn the rest of the world.

I wish... but the wife and family keep getting in the way...

Uh, not very... Can you chill out and try to understand that this forum is for serious discussion about radio and scanning in western Canada? We are all here for the same reason, and if you just want to come here to discuss things like illegal mods to your handhelds then take it somewhere else like hamsexy or something.

All right, everybody take a big step back from the keyboard and chill out. We don't behave like this here.

If you two have issues to work out amongst each other, take it to PMs.
