• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I'm not the easiest person to assist because I get frustrated when I can't seem to word the question correctly.
LOL. I've just recently thru a cable across the room I was having issues with so poor wording is the least of my worries. I need to stop that nonsense. Good luck.

I have been told that the XPR-6550 is best programmed with CPS 16.0 828, whereas the XPR-7550 is programmed with CPS 2.0,which I also have already.
As mentioned above, to some degree this is personal preference. At least on my computer here, Cps 2.0 seems much much slower but it a couple of other things that have helped some of us thru out recent years. I still use a mix of 16.828 and 2.0 depending on what radio I'm working on at the time, and also obviously what firmware it has. Recently I got a few SL-300s, and SL7550s and they were simply too new in firmware to use CPS 16.
I have also been told that the 6550 will not accept the wideband entitlement without a change to the hex code, which is what I'm trying to do.
Yes to my knowledge they stopped support for 16 some time ago, so modifying it is the only way to get the wide band. I "read once" that someone said if you get the wide band for 2.0 it also activates it on 16, but guys near me that have tried that, it hasn't worked for them. Hex editing things is an experience within itself so it's all a learning curve.

Frankly when we started this Motorola stuff some years back for 33cm ham, it was almost a different subculture itself and new learning. Hang in there, it's all a learning experience and once you get it, you'll be glad you hung around.

Yeah, it's a "subculture", lol. I'm still trying to get one of my hotspots back up and running, one died and now has no display, the other has the display again but I can't get the dashboard to show up on my computer. Tried wife and ethernet, neither. Computer even says it can't find wpsd/local. But that's off topic, gonna go back to trying to fix the CPS 16.0. You know, out of 3 projects you'd think I could get ONE working.

You mentioned 6550 and wideband. Wideband in trbo is tied to the programming software not the specific radio itself.

And yes cps16 requires a file hex edited to enable wideband as the authentication server no longer communicates to the older software.

Holy Crap! Something I actually knew! LOL!

As I said above, I've gotten some help off forum. No time before work tonight, but the ext few days should show progress.

Well the saga continues, working on learning CPS 16.0 828 so I can use the XPR-6550. Meanwhile a UHF SL-7550 arrived and I somehow managed to program 3 DMR repeaters into it, one right by my apartment and 2 about 30 minutes South where I go to visit my son. The one close by works quite well, and I’m really impressed for a 2 watt radio. If nothing else, it gets me on the airwaves and it’s a great confidence builder toward other Motorola projects.
