Hello group, this will be my 2nd post. I bought a pro 651 from an RS store going out of business about a month ago $120.00 and finally got around to buying the programing cable after I had manually programed a few local frequencies. I am seeking guidance as to using the software & cable. I have read a few posts stating some users have "bricked their scanner" which I would like to avoid. I saw the video on this site showing the programming of a pro 106 which I have read has been repackaged as a pro 651. I am a bit intimidated as I do not want to do what can't be undone. Please accept my apologies if this has been asked many times before.

I have watched the tutorial video and loaded the software and drivers. When I open the software and go to the top Internet drop down there is no free trial does the 651 not offer a free trial or am I doing something wrong?

You won't brick your scanner by programming it. At worst you'll just need to erase what you've programmed and start over. Those that bricked their scanners did so by trying to update the firmware with an update that was meant for a different scanner. Just be cautious about doing any firmware update. Even if you're updating with a valid firmware update, simply things, like a power interruption during the process, can cause it to be bricked. The worst that will happen by programming is that you'll program it wrong and it won't scan anything and you'll have to try again.

While you can program this scanner manually from the keypad, I would highly suggest you at least look at some of the software solutions for programming. There are three software programs that are available for this scanner, Win500, ARC500 and PSREdit500. All three come with a 30 day free trial and after that you would have to register one (or more) of them.

Thank You Rick, I will try the programming links you referenced as the one that came with the cable from RS won't allow a free session.

I did it, took me a few tries to get it right but I programmed my scanner. I was even able to assign led colors to different agencies. Thanks to all for you guidance.
