new to rail road scanning.

I have moved to a new office building which is about a 1/4 ig a mile from a railroad crossing. Also a big train yard is 1 mile to the south of me. What do I need to look for to figure out whom they are and the frequencies.

Most railroad activity is located in the 160-161 mHz range. There are sites listing specific frequencies for various locations and railroads which you should be able find in these threads. Also, you might try doing a Google search for specific areas for rail frequencies. This should give you some of the information you are looking for.

I have all the band channel freqs listed on the RR Freq page of my site, along with freqs for many individual railroads as well. The big railroads pretty much use every channel in the band, somewhere in the country. The smaller roads use 1 to 10 channels or so, depending on their size.

Railroad comms are basically broken into the road channels, where trains talk to the dispatchers... Yard channels, where switch crews talk while switching cars... And then other various support freqs for intermodal terminal ops, maint., maintenance, and other things.
