Is there a user group or somewere [sic] in the SLC area I can go to for help?
To my knowledge there is NOT a physical group that gets together to exchange ideas other than right here on the RR Utah Forum.
Utah Viper attempted to set up a "club" type meeting in the Salt Lake area, but it seems that there was not enough interest or the schedules were too varied to have it come together.
It would help to know what your location is and the type of scanning/frequencies/agencies that you are interested in. This hobby can cover an extremely broad range of interests.
I have looked up your scanner model on the Internet and you have a fairly robust unit. There is software available for your unit to help you program it straight from the RR Database. Again, I am not familiar with your unit but the info I see on it makes it sound relatively easy to program. If you bought it from a dealer, he might be able to give you some pointers, but often the dealers do not have expertise with the technical workings of all the units they sell. I do see that your Uniden Bearcat 396T is Trunk Tracker capable and you will need that in most of Utah if you want to monitor police/fire/EMS agencies.
There is also a section here in the RR Forum that is dedicated to Uniden scanners. It is located up higher in the list of all sections (19th down from the top and called
Uniden Scanners) and I know that someone there could help you, but again, they would be written instructions which may be a problem for you. The best thing I can tell you is do not become frustrated. I know that you will, but fight it because once you get your unit programmed you will find a new world opening up to you.
