Hello, I am new and don't know what Iam doing. Is there a place in Salt Lake I can go to for help with setting up my 396t scanner?

Welcome Aboard !
I personally am not familiar with the 396t however I have been scanning in this area for many years. This website is a great resource for information. Look through the database and that information. The posters on this board are also very helpful. Hopefully someone here has that scanner and can get you set up !

What Utah Viper says, "Welcome aboard." This site is probably one of the best, if not the best for getting information and help. Most of the regular posters here are ready to help if they can and if they should mess up, another member will straighten them up post haste!

Like Utah Viper I am not familiar with your scanner, but if you can post some specific questions, someone might recognize the situation and give you some help. Don't be a stranger here and don't feel stupid. This hobby can be quite technical, but enjoyable and time consuming.

Again, welcome khildy.

To my knowledge there is NOT a physical group that gets together to exchange ideas other than right here on the RR Utah Forum. Utah Viper attempted to set up a "club" type meeting in the Salt Lake area, but it seems that there was not enough interest or the schedules were too varied to have it come together.

It would help to know what your location is and the type of scanning/frequencies/agencies that you are interested in. This hobby can cover an extremely broad range of interests.

I have looked up your scanner model on the Internet and you have a fairly robust unit. There is software available for your unit to help you program it straight from the RR Database. Again, I am not familiar with your unit but the info I see on it makes it sound relatively easy to program. If you bought it from a dealer, he might be able to give you some pointers, but often the dealers do not have expertise with the technical workings of all the units they sell. I do see that your Uniden Bearcat 396T is Trunk Tracker capable and you will need that in most of Utah if you want to monitor police/fire/EMS agencies.

There is also a section here in the RR Forum that is dedicated to Uniden scanners. It is located up higher in the list of all sections (19th down from the top and called Uniden Scanners) and I know that someone there could help you, but again, they would be written instructions which may be a problem for you. The best thing I can tell you is do not become frustrated. I know that you will, but fight it because once you get your unit programmed you will find a new world opening up to you.

I had tried in the past to arrange a get together with no avail. I would be happy to meet up with fellow scanners in the area. If I knew more on your radio I would help you set it up. If there any specific questions on Utah scanning, or Scanning in general I would be happy to help as well.

I wouldn't mind getting together with some people that know more than me about scanning.

Just checking in to see if you had any luck on your scanner? I have the BC296D and it works nice in the valley. I use Butel's ARC software to program mine. It works real well.

Hello,

I picked up the ARC software and was able to program the scanner that way. I am still learing how to program the scanner by it's self. It seems to ome slow, but a little at a time.

Thanks for your help and concern, Keith

Do not for one second think you're 'slow' if you find the 396 a bit difficult to understand, and especially its manual.

It IS a very complex radio, which allows it to do a lot of very nice things that others can't.

The manual in particular is VERY bad, lacking an index/table of contents, etc.

One help is here: Easier to use 396 manual, a manual on the web with good indexing.
