Great information here guys.

Thank you so much. I'm loving zone 4 !

Out of curiousity, have you figured out what beat you're on? I know you're on the 1st & 18th District border based upon which side of the river you're on. I have heard a few interesting calls I was wondering if you caught? The one that sticks in my head (pardon the pun), is the male who fell from the Columbus Ave. bridge last weekend and landed on the north end of the river. I'm sure that had to be quite a debate on the Zone.." Squad, this appears to be on the 18 side, could you send a car from 18 to handle the paper?" "Um no squad, the bridge is in 1, therefore it's theirs despite he fell on the north end":..ok, i'm making that up but not far off..lol.
One thing about Zone 4 is the weekday downtown visitors. Everyone has a cell phone and some of the calls that people make, baffle me. I'm sure it's a never ending story down there. The north end of 18 still contains the Cabrini Greens housing project, so the action goes there late i'm sure. Glad you're enjoying the city, our listening, and all the good advice you're getting here. Their are a ton a reference and resources available to you, and it seems you have a good grasp on Chicago stuff....

I'm really still learning. I'm getting a grasp of the streets around my area. So, no, I haven't figured out the beat yet.

My kids and I were amazed at the calls last Saturday, though. The number of "battery" and homeless calls is astounding, especially compared to suburban Milwaukee.

Yeah, lots of good stuff in those districts. In my mind, the best Officers are there. Shades points out something good...district borders. There can be arguments on the zone from time to time about who's gonna handle it. Bridges in 1 and 18...once in a while you'll get jumpers. Some jumps are accidental such as the call Shades mentions recently.

In my Zone (3), we had a freeway jumper and the best decision that could be made was for 13 and 14 to co-handle the incident. WBBM reported that there was a "Fatal Accident" at the scene, but the zone reported a suicide. Don't ya like how a jumper from a freeway bridge gets made into a "Fatal Accident" by the media?

The poor trucker who hit the subject when he jumped must have been beyond traumatized. Which reminds me, hey, Shades, I hear Chalky is getting busy again!
