I just received my BC796-D, and as I'm new to digital and trunked programming, I have a couple of questions:

1. When loading in the 800 frequencies, I should enter all of them, including the control frequencies, right?

2. My scanner came "loaded" with Maryland trunked systems already, (I didn't like the way they were loaded in, thus the reason for re-programming.) I notice that with all the trunk activity, it is very hard to toggle banks on/off as I seem to get into List mode. Is there any way around that?

I'm going by the old line that there are no stupid questions here. Any help or answers you could give me would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

The first thing I can recommend is getting a copy of some other scanning program besides E-scanner and using it for all of your programming. It's much easier, and you're not going to keep the setup that you first program in... you'll want to tweak, tweak, tweak and it's so much easier if you can just re-upload from the PC into the scanner when you make changes.

To answer the questions:

1) For the best results, yes, you do want to enter all of the frequencies for the system. Make sure you are using the menus and setting trunked frequencies up through the trunking programming menu and not just entering them into the banks.

2) To toggle between List mode and Bank mode, press the "." key. You sometimes have to press it a couple of times to get it to work properly as it's kind of picky when it will accept it. (Disclaimer: This is how it works on the 780 and 785, as far as I know the 796 isn't different.)

Happy Scanning!

P.S. Is this THE Aaron Rehkopf from WPOC? :D If so, keep up your good work!

One and the same, Llwellyn.

Do you have a scanning program that you prefer, and where might I obtain it?

Thanks again.

I was using the demo version of TrunkStar 785D from Signal Intelligence. There's no mention of whether it's compatible with the 796D though; it SHOULD be but I'd definitely call/email them first and make sure. The software is current, but their webpages are out of date. Eventually I'll probably purchase either TrunkStar or ARC250. ARC250 is confirmed to work for the 796D, but it's more expensive than TrunkStar and the demo is more limited.

ARC250: http://www.butel.nl/bc785/bc250index.html

Aaron, the ARC250 and ARC250PRO software programs from Butel are among the best and most popular. Should you decide to go that route, there are posted memory files in several places that you can download for the Baltimore and D.C. areas that will save you countless time and effort. Just give a shout whichever software you decide on and someone will post directions to already completed files of frequencies and talk groups.

Thanks to those that replied to my query.

I have purchased the ARC250 PRO software from BuTel, and now I will be looking for those places where the trunking lists have already been created. Any help to that end would be greatly appreciated!

Still learning, so more questions may arise. Thanks again!
