I was just wondering about the freqencies for the opp helicopters, because the other day i had one flying around my area, they must of been searching for someone. Cause they don't come around here to often, first time i seen one. Are they on the Bellfleet net or something else.

I'd imagine that they would likely use one of the tactical talkgroups or just an ops talkgroup as well as perhaps air frequencies to talk to air traffic. I suppose it would depend on what kind of operation the chopper was involved in.

Just as guess on my part, though. Last time I was anywhere near an OPP helicopter was before the days of Fleetnet.

I can recall hearing an 'incident' involving the helicopter on I think 148.765.

This was in Bronte Park in Oakvilleback in 2003.

I wonder if using Fleetnet from the air would be a bad idea. Get several thousand feet in the air and you'll affiliate with any number of towers.

Sim11 is probably a good one and maybe some of the VHF/UHF simplex frequencies.

The last time I caught one of their choopers on the air around here, it was indeed on SIM11.

I can't speak for OPP choppers but I heard a Peel chopper helping out Toronto police and it was running on the TPS system and on the talkgroup of the division it was supporting. (31 Division)

Peel Chopper, huh... must have been quite a while ago.

Mr. Weather's exactly right... Smartzone trunked radio systems, especially as one as far-flung as Fleetnet, are useless from the air. Helicopters are patched into the system via a simplex frequency.

Hmmm. I think it was York now that I think about it, based on where it took off from. I'm not sure how they patched in but I was listening to the talk group of the division on the ground and I could hear the chopper talking bi-directional with the officers on scene.

It would be cool to find out the patch frequency but that aside, if the objective is to hear them then I'd suggest a good place to start would be with the frequency / talk group of the ground troops.
