New to this website...

Hi, I'm new to scanning and this forum. I just purchased a Uniden BC92XLT. I am just starting a Emergency Dispatch position. I was told that aquiring a scanner would be helpfull to learn how the emergency calls come in and out. I have picked up the local police broadcasts, the only thing is it isn't coming in that loud. I figure it's probably mostly to do with the antenna but I was wondering if it's the scanner itself. Is this scanner considered a real low end scanner, or is it decent? Any help would be usefull. If it is the scanner, can you please suggest one that would be a lot better but not empty my wallet. Something around $150-$200.

I'm located in Watauga County North Carolina.

I want to monitor the sherriff,medic and police frequencies. I don't know if it's VHF or digital I think it's only analog.

When you say loud, I assume you mean the reception is less then clear. If you are right in the town that you are trying to listen to, and it's a system where they use handhelds, you should be getting it fairly well. That's a decent radio. You might try a slightly better handheld antenna. Either get one that's better over all, like the Diamond RH77CA, or one that is made for whatever band you are trying to hear. If you're driving, a simple mag mount 1/4 wave for the car will be better.

Thanks for the help, I believe the main antenna is going to a repeater which hits the handhelds. What I've been doing is just leaving the scanner in scan mode and making it scan over the 6 or so programmed frequencies I have loaded is that a good way to do it? Or should I used the close call capture function and have it capture close call frequencies. The only bad part about using that is it will tell me it found a close call frequency but not show me the frequency number.
