New truck to coordinate emergency communications

Denver police are demonstrating a new truck this morning that was given to the department to help local law enforcement agencies connect their radio systems, in case of a large-scale emergency, such as the Columbine shootings, where officers from dozens of agencies could not communicate with one another by radio.
The 4-wheel drive truck was purchased by the Department of Justice Wireless Management Office. Denver is one o f 25 cities nationwide to receive a vehicle to assist in linking incompatible radio systems, a problem that has cropped up in major disasters from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to the Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts.
The truck is being shown this morning at the Police Protective Association, 2105 Decatur St.
