New User; Motorola STX

I am a little new at this guys, but I would really appreciate any help you can give me. I have a Motorola STX with a GPS ver 1.1 controller. I need to get it programmed for the Nashville Metro area. I know I need the RSS from Motorola, as well as the RIB and cable to the radio. I also figure I need to get the frequencies and/or codes I need to program it with. Since I am kinda new to this, can anyone tell me a little about how this all works? Where do I go to find the correct freq / codes for Nashville, how are they programmed via the RSS software. I know the GPS controller in the radio will work with a type II system, and I "think" that nashville is on a type II, but I am not 100% sure.

Also, my charger is dead for the radio. Anyone have one for sale?

For the additonal amount of money you will need to spend on the accessories, plus additional issues such as software, system key to program, rib/cable and a limited scan list 5 + 1 talkgroups and no conventional scan and its seems based on the short post of your questions of programmming , you would be better of buying a scanner. Since the STX won't do digital a PRO -95 would be a good buy, lots of talkgroups, scanlist, cheap cable, alpha tagging and none of the headaches.. with the newer Radio Shack 800MHZ antenna you should get good performance .
The newer line of scanners from the Shack and Uniden are decent and I think in the long run you'll be happier... just a thought

I concur with Mozilla. If you get a genuine Motorola RIB it will cost an average $250?. If you can still get STX RSS from Motorola that will cost $350?. Motorola doesn't support the STX anymore so I'm not sure if you can get the RSS from them. The cables will cost an average $100?. Let's not forget the computer. The STX RSS was/is DOS based so you'll need an older slower computer, i.e. 80286 or 80386. Some of the older RSS doesn't work well with faster computers when using the DOS shell in Windows.

When I was a police officer with Anne Arundel County, Maryland we used the STX. I thought it was a good durable radio and had excellent audio. The problem is that it's a dated radio. Our department had problems finding replacement parts if one went bad. They had to scour the internet sometimes looking for parts. The communications officer would just about have kittens on the spot if you brought your troubled radio to her. I'm sure your radio won't see the use and abuse we gave them but if it does break???

I would buy a PRO96. You're not limited to only listening to the TRS you're currently listening to. It has the capability for software interfacing, uses AA batteries, does digital, less expensive that the Motorola, more memory, and the list goes on. You could probably purchase the scanner, cable, and software for less than the total cost of the RIB, RSS, and related cables for the STX. BTW, it won't need that drop in charger either.
