Hi everyone. I'm after some tips if I can. I am in Hervey Bay Queensland Australia. I got my scanner today and only have an indoor antenna. So far I can't seem to pick anything up. Is it because the indoor antenna is not strong.

I was supposed to get an outdoor magnetic base antenna with it but I didnt. Can I buy the antenna and cable already to go from somewhere?

Cheers
Nick

I assume you have programmed in the below frequencies. Check your squelch setting.

Frequency Type Tone Alpha Tag Description Mode Tag
467.325 RM 179.9 PL 23 Hervey Bay FMN Fire Dispatch
467.500 RM 179.9 PL 25 Hervey Bay FMN Fire Dispatch
469.950 RM 107.2 PL 196 "Hervey Bay, Kingaroy, Lyons Lookout, Wongaling Beach" FMN Law Dispatch

So that's all in Mhz. I get nothing. This is all new to me.

The first thing, how far are you from the sites you are trying to listen to? What is the squelch set at? Are those agencies encrypted? Are they using trunked systems or conventional systems?

I was trying to listen to airports. Nearest is about 20k away. My squelch is right up. I don't think the frequencies would be encrypted.

I use to have an 8500 the predecessor to the 9000. It's a good scanner, believe those were the Uniden first scanners
to offer "alpha tags" for channels 001-250 . Have you tried moving the scanner around the room? Sometimes it's just
a positional problem. Don't know if you have the owners manual. There's a link for the 9000, below. According to the
database for Queensland, the Fire Service in not encrypted and not trunked. So, programming wise you just need to
enter the frequencies shown above.
Something else, one issue I use to run into was using the large knob to manually change channels. I'd sometimes hit the
freq button (upper right of knob, when facing it) by accident. As a result when I thought I was changing the channel,
I was actually changing the frequency.
Any ham radio shops, should stock scanner antennas and connected coax. I use a car magnet mount antenna on the window
ledge of my apartment.
