I already do that by just setting the service tags I want to listen to, permanently avoiding systems I don't want to listen to and the GPS attachment to automatically change what I listen to as I travel. It doesn't really scan the whole database just what's available for where I am and the tags I set. With favorite lists I would have to manually change the list based on where I am. Why would I want to listen to Koutenay County in Idaho when I am in Adams County. It will automatically add it when I am in Spokane while using the GPS unit along with dropping Adams County when I am in Spokane. So basically its just a Favorite list that evolves as I travel.
Right, or well sort of. You can set up your favorites list for location based scanning, you don't have to manually change them as you travel, where did you get that idea? The database is always going to include a bunch of stuff you're not interested in. That's all stuff it has to chug through on every scan, causing your scan cycle to be unnessesarily long. This means you're missing parts of conversations you needn't miss. If you like to travel with the radio, just create a separate favorites list that includes all the counties you travel through. Make each county a Department, and winnow out all the crap from the database you're not interested in. If you like, change the alpha tags as you see fit so they make more sense. The RR database tags are horrible. Change the location info as you see fit too. The database is full of location inaccuracies. When you're done, enable those counties/departments for location based scanning, plug in your GPS and go. I'd bet money your scanning experience will be much improved over using the full database.
Another great thing you can do with Favorites Lists is assign Quick Keys to all your Favorite Lists, Systems, Departments and Sites, and also Number Tags to certain channels or talk groups. This way you can enable/disable things easily on the fly. And if the scanner blows by some interesting conversation, you can stop and quickly navigate back to that channel to hear what's going on.
Basically the database is like a set of training wheels. It's there as Nick said to draw in the new scanner user, but the x36 radios have so much more to offer to anyone who takes the time to program them properly. Favorites Lists are the key to this.
