• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This week Icom introduced it's newest portable for Spring 2012, the IC-F3031/4041S. The new radio is IP67 rated, fully waterproof for submersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This portable was designed for land mobile users requiring a waterproof radio without the fancy features of the F50/60V series or F70/80 series. The radio shares a VERY close resemblance to the F3021/F4021S UHF and VHF radios with just one main exception: a NEW 2250mAh Waterproof Li-Ion Battery - Up to 17 Hrs!

Layout of the radio is simple with 7 programmable buttons (4 front Px, 3 side option), top orange emergency button, 8-character display screen, volume knob, etc.
NOTE* Icom has informed dealers that the traditional Icom 2-pin accessories NOT fit this radio, presumably because of its IP67 rating.

Radio are in-stock and available through your local Icom dealer for ordering.

Looks like a pretty decent radio, but why in the heck did they not put a channel selector on it? If they did I think it would have been a really good lower-tier radio for firefighting due to the IP67 rating and probably lower price than the F70 and F3161. However without a channel selector I definitely wouldn't use it for such a purpose.

Also, did anyone check out Icom's product page for the F3031? What is the other portable in the picture? That's definitely not the F3031; it almost looks like an F3161, but not quite. Maybe a sneak peak at something else to come?

A little side note... This is the first model for the land mobile division that will only do narrowband operation. No wideband is available.

Waterproof Accessories and Compatibility

Here is the news on the speaker mics and other audio accessories that will keep this radio sealed and IP67 rated when an accessory is plugged in...

All of Icom's current 2-pin speaker mics are having their jack redesigned to keep the F3031/4031 waterproof. The new jack design will fill all old 2-pin radios (F3001/3011/14/3021/33G) and will fit the new F3031 and keep it waterproof. Any old speaker mic will fit the old radios and may even fit the F3031, but will NOT keep it water tight.

Old speaker mics have the "L" at the end of the model # (ex.HM-159L)
New speaker mics will have an "LA" at the end of the model # (HM-159LA)

There will be no price change and the LA versions will replace the L version in Icom's land mobile product listing. Just be careful on eBay when shopping for used mics if you have a F3031 which needs to remain waterproof.

I'm guessing a competitor to Vertex's VX-450 series. Hopefully this will be a solid radio.
