Just as in all the third world countries you see on TV, the locals in our cities fire celebratory shots into the air. Of course they give no thought to what goes up must come down and so people always get hurt. My winner for this year's best New Year's night call came from District 6 in D.C. last night...

DISPATCHER: Report of a man with a gun, shooting into the air in front of __________. (Few seconds pause, no answer)

DISPATCHER: Caller reports he's now sitting in front of that address reloading.

MOBILE UNIT: We're not responding to any of those calls Dispatcher unless there's a body to go with it.

10 second pause and then...
DISTRICT COMMANDER: Dispatcher, send two cars to that address immediately.
*********************************************************
My second favorite transmission came from Baltimore city police and I believe it was the Northeast Division.

MOBILE UNIT: We have several people discharging* here. Contact Foxtrot to see if he can come in and spot some of these guys.

The dispatcher didn't even honor that with an answer. Yeah, like Foxtrot is going to come into an area with a bunch of people firing into the air.

*(For those not familiar with Baltimore, "discharging" is their term for firing a gun and Foxtrot is the police helicopter.)

Just another night in scannerland.

From the "truth is stranger than fiction" category from last night. Two men trying to subdue a gunman who was dressed in a tuxedo shirt & traditional Scotish kilt. This was in 3rd district [DC] in the 1300 block of V st. NW, north alley. Anyone catch this on the scanner? Was sometime around 1:30 am. Not sure if anyone was shot, but there were about 10 MPD units & a fire/ems truck. I was at a party next door to this 'situation' and left shortly afterwards. Enough excitement for one night...

FIRE/RESCUE & POLICE went up the street with lights & sirens on, but nothing came over on 7a or 7b [do not have police - got the old VHF analog]. I think it was a new years thing because the sirens went on then off from 00:00 on to about 00:10. So neighborhood people shot fire works but the police did not do anything nore did I call it in, but anyway

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2005 TO ALL POLICE & FIRE/RESCUE + AS WELL AS ALL OF US WHO ARE NOT EMERGENCY PEOPLE :-(.
