Good Day.. I am very new to this Amature Radio, so I apologize if this is the wrong forum. Im 55 yrs old and travel between Florida, Louisiana and Massachusetts. I am an engineer on a supply vessel in the gulf of Mexico, I m working on getting may technician license. I have 2 radios, the rapid radio EMG 1 and the Boafeng UV82. Unfortunately my weak spot is electrical, I am trying to understand this material. Can anyone point me in a direction of a resource that can explain this to a Electrical idiot with ADHA.. lol. Thank you in Advance. And hope to transmit soon. Lol.

WELCOME!

We all learn at different paces and thru different avenues, so you will want to shop around for the approach that works best for you.

PRINTED BOOKS/STUDY GUIDES
  • The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and Gordon West both have comprehensive technician class study guides (books). I vastly prefer West's because his writing style is less formal and easier to read.
ONLINE
  • Dave Casler, KE0OG, has an excellent series of general interest ham radio videos as well as a technician class specific series (Dave Casler Technician Course 2022-2026). He uses the ARRL book, but I won't hold that against him (I've known Dave since junior high).
  • There a lot of other YouTubers with ham radio videos. Most of these are painful to watch.
  • Ham Test Online (HamTestOnline - Study for your Ham Radio License Exam) offers a fee-based online course for each license class and has a 100% fee refund guarantee if you don't pass the test. Their approach serves up the test material in small chunks, then tests your progress. I found their course quite helpful when I was studying for my Extra.
IN PERSON
  • An in person mentor in ham radio is called an "Elmer", and is a very effective way to learn. This may not be practical in your situation since you aren't land based.

I would suggest reading THIS thread regarding the Rapid Radios and your EMG-1. The advertising on the Rapid Radios website is, in a word, deceptive.

A good test prep course is here: HamStudy.org: Cutting edge amateur radio study tools
It can give you sample tests using the official test questions and tell you which areas you need to study more. It also helps explain why the correct answers are correct. If you can successfully pass through these, then you should be ready for the real test.
